Mars needs telescopes....

bybrasshopper Aug 14, 2003

Pros Simple, complete (for the beginner).
Cons You may want a bigger scope than 4.5".
Recommended it? Yes

The telescope is a beginner's telescope. First off, the previous reviewer noted that his instruction book was not complete for the 114. This has been changed by Celestron: The current telescope treats the 114 as a peer, and all the documentation is in the manual.
Secondly, this is a Newtonian... Read full review »

I will preface this review with the following caution: I AM A BEGINNER IN THE WORLD OF ASTRONOMY!!! Now, having thrown down that gauntlet, let me explain to you the virtues of this particular telescope made by Celestron

You may find this telescope listed as the NexStar 114GT on various... Read full review »

Overview:
This telescope is being sold at Costco for $200. Given the price, simplicity of setup and the decent quality of the scope, I would recommend it to any casual hobbyist. Hurry before they run out-of-stock.

Contents:
The kit contains in addition to the 114mm Newtonian... Read full review »

Pros Huge Star Library, Price, and Motorized.
Cons Battery life, Difficult to use, Annoying Set-up
Recommended it? No

The Celestron NexStar 114GT is a good telescope but needs some improvements. A good beginner scope but you must have some knowledge of the stars and heavens. First off the scope requires you to know where certain stars are for alignment. Now if your in a certain area or are a beginner to astronomy... Read full review »

Pros Great mount and computer control will give hours of observing.
Cons Optics could be better.
Recommended it? Yes

This scope is an entry level unit with a great computer mount. It excels at locating any object in the sky. After entering the local latitude, longitude, date and time the scope automatically points to the first alignment star. Center that star in the eyepiece hit the align button the scope then... Pros Easily assembled and set-up
Cons Can't see Mars as people have described.
Recommended it? Yes

I recently purchased this telescope as an entry level unit because after reading a number of reviews, I was lead to believe you could see Mars with some clarity. I read about the ability to see the polar caps, etc. etc.
Well either I have done something completely wrong in the assembly or... Read full review »

Pros Compact design; goto features; price in today's market
Cons Accessory tray and goto hand control mount are awkward.
Recommended it? Yes

This is my first telescope purchase. I'm an amateur at best; primarily someone who has always had a fascination for the sky and space but no formal education in the field whatsoever. That being said, I'm an avid reader who spent a fair amount of time researching my purchase. I paid significantly... Read full review »
