The Bottom Line:
Clearplay offers a one of a kind experience in DVD watching.
While the technology behind the Clearplay DVD players is ingenious and very useful in my opinion, the use of cheap players and a very poorly developed interface may lead some people to a lot of frustration.
Let me start with the good. If you even know what a Clearplay DVD Player is then you most likely know what it is and what it does. This DVD player will edit movies as you watch them letting the user select all different levels of censoring. I will preface the rest of this review by saying that I am currently on my fourth unit which leads me to the first really positive piece of information. The Clearplay customer service rocks. They are available late on the weekdays and even on weekends, and you can also email and they will reply within a couple of days. Each time I have had the unit replaced (3 times) they have led me through a process of upgrading the firmware, resetting the unit, and then finally they agreed to send me a new one with all the shipping paid. They have been very honest in admitting the deficiencies in the players and never gave me any hassle.
Now with the bad. I'm on my fourth player. The first one didn't play DVD's at all. The second one stopped working after about six months of working pretty good. The third one seemed to have solved a lot of issues with playback and fewer software glitches but the sound was distorted out of the RCA jacks.
Over the past 10 months or so that I have been trying to use Clearplay I have been impressed out of my mind with the Customer Service and with the idea of letting my kids watch movies free of offensive language and crude humor while enjoying some titles myself that I wouldn't otherwise watch. Although the actual product seems like it still needs some work I can only give positive reviews of the company itself.
