I was looking for a new Radar Detector for our new VW Beetle GLX 1.8 turbo. The Beetle does not have a compass fitted and when I saw the Cobra 9550 with built-in compass I thought it would be just the thing. However after installing it and setting the compass (both very easy to do) I noticed that the display lacked brightness in daylight. To the point that I couldn't really see the display when wearing sunglasses. Even on a dull day the display was hard to read ! When visible (at night) the display is good and has all the right info. The next problem was the sound level with the radio on at a normal sound level it was hard to hear the different sounds the detector made. Even with the detector volume at max (10) it was too quiet. I would NOT recommend the Cobra 9550 Radar Detector because it is too hard to see and hear.
