The Bottom Line:
Overall, I would recommend this product. Mainly based on its price in conjunction with its performance.
The Cobra 9860 radar detector may not be the best radar detector on the market, but it is valuable nonetheless. If it protects you from getting pulled over once it is worth the $100.00 that you pay for it. This is a beautiful looking detector, and I love the voice alert feature, the tones alone get boring after awhile. I mean this detector actually talks to you and tells you what kind of radar is hitting your car, if an emergency vehicle is coming, and even if the cops are using VG-2 (a "detector detector"-cobra-) on you. The 9860 also has a smart-mute function that will mute the detector whenever your engine is below a certain rpm, that you set. This function has worked out pretty well for me. I also like the built in compass, it comes in very handy for those of us that have no sense of direction. Unfortunately, this model does not have the auto off feature to save you from running your battery down if you forget to turn it off. Supposedly the new Cobra models coming out have this feature.

The X band detection on this model seems to be very sensitive, which means city mode is the mode I travel in. The K band detection seems to be good, and the Ka band detection seems to be adequate. I have had the detector for awhile now and I am still waiting for it to detect a laser. Now that does not mean that it doesn't work, it could be that laser hasn't been used on me, but it is not a good sign.
For the most part this cobra detector will do an adequate job for you. If you are very Serious about avoiding a ticket, a more expensive radar detector would provide you with more protection. So if you have the extra money to put up, that would be your best option.
