Cobra FRS 110 FRS radios. Nice gift.

Pros Very good radios for people that have never used FRS before.
Cons You will like them but you will want to buy better ones with CTCSS codes.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  You will want to TALKABOUT it! Your first Cobra 110's will make a great gift for someone close to you. Literally!
These radios look rather plain. They are black.

I also have a Cobra 115 that is red and has built in AM/FM radio.( Great stereo FM music with headphones. The 115 was not expensive and can be bought with a double radio charger. NO CTCSS codes.)

The Cobra 110 has a battery save mode and I understand that the batteries do last along time. Some people think that radios with 3 AA batteries are better. Both the 110 and the 115 use four AAA's.

The 110's are very popular in Toronto and they have a special beeps at the end of each transmission. That feature is not needed because FRS transmitts in FM or Frequency Modulation and it is easy enough to hear when the other person is finished talking.

Before rushing out to buy an in-expensive pair of Cobra 110's you should know that most people realise after a while that they should have bought radios that have sub-channels.

The 110's do have 14 channels but in busy areas you can get too much interference from other people. The 38 sub-channels, filter out other groups along with other noise.

The range you can expect varys a whole lot. From two blocks to about 5-7 miles. You should expect less than a mile in built up areas. Get up high if you want good range. Hint. They work on line of sight.

All FRS radios are expected to have about the same range. Some do it better than others. I don't think any one really knows which type are best. It's very hard to test that.

( If you think that most of your use will be from car to car you must find out about the Radio Shack 21-1850 mobile. It is the only one of it's type and is available only because of a loop hole in FRS radio restrictions.).

If you choose these radios and find that you use them a lot, I bet you will want to find out more about FRS and other kinds of radios. Trust me, they can be very addictive. They make a heck of a great gift!

The thing most people think about FRS is " Why didn't I have THESE when I was a kid! "

Thank you!
