The Bottom Line:
Worth the price if you get it with battery packs
I've had a few 1/2 watt GMRS radios (Audiovox, Motorola)and these are pretty good for the price. The audio quality and comfort of use is actually better than some of Cobra's more expensive radios (which I've returned). The range is as good or better than other 1/2 watt radios, which is much less than 2 miles if there is any obstruction including buildings, inside a car, hills, and even trees. Still, they've made life easier at the mall and around our farm. Battery life is excellent. I use them with AAA NiMH rechargables and they can easily go a couple of days of moderate use without recharging. My only complaint has to do with not enough tension holding individual AAA batteries in place. If the radio is dropped or even bumped the batteries will momentarily disconnect, turning off the radio without your knowledge. When you turn it back on again any memory settings will be lost. A solution to this could be purchasing the battery pack offered by Cobra which would probably sit in the radio more securely (I've found this to be true with other radios). One of the radios also has taken to resetting itself sometimes when you turn it off. This also causes a loss of memory for channel, privacy code, etc.
