The Bottom Line:
This radio is a good buy for the money. It is easy to use, has some extras and typical range.
The COBRA PR 245 2 way radio that I used had 22 channels (the epinions detail page only lists 7 channels). It also had 38 privacy codes that you could use giving you over 800 different talking combinations.
The radio has all of the basics including a belt clip and an illuminated LCD screen to make it easy to use at night. It includes some extras like the privacy codes, 5 different selectable call tones and an earbud/microphone jac, but it isn't loaded. It doesn't include such things as NOAA weather channels, compass, or a clock.
It is simple and easy to use. It has .5 watts of power or 1 full watt when you use the extended range mode. The manufacturer lists this radio has having a 6 mile range. I found the range typical of most 2 way radios. We were able to get about 1/2 mile easily in the city (more if we were outside). We easily got 2 miles outside of the city and did even better in complete open range.
While those ranges may not sound great, they are very comparable to most 2 way radios that we have used (including those that claim a 20 mile range).
The COBRA PR 245 runs on 4 AAA alkaline batteries (24 hours of talk time) or the COBRA FA-BP rechargeable battery pack (about 6-10 hours between charges).
