Great new Brand!
Pros
Affordable, small, Great features, upgradeable, 5.1 Built in Decoder
Cons
No LED display, No Audio In input, remote could have been better organized
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I highly recommend this system, worth at least twice what I paid. May not be known now but soon will become one of the best DVD players in the world.
Being a huge advocate of the principle of paying more for a brand name, I was hesitant to pick this one up. However, yesterday I found a deal on it which comes out to be $50 totally, so I figured I will give it a try. I have read good reviews about it before but still was hesitant.
Ok the first thing you notice about this unit is that it is extremely small for a full feature DVD player. When I opened the package, I was **very** happy to see that Yamakawa did include all the cables you need, and more! In addition to the standard 3 way RCA cable all DVD players include, this one had two more 2 way RCA cables, and an S-Video cable!!
Ok so I connect it and turn it on. I put Moulin Rouge in and see. I was very impressed with the picture qualitity, it is really really good, my TV has never been this clear. What is more impressive is the sound, I tried also playing audio CDs and MP3 CDs on it and the sound quality is excellent, crisp, clear sound, even though I only connected it to a regular 2 speaker 1 subwoofer system.
I didn't have to read the whole manual to figure out how to run it, it is really intutive and easy to use.
While it is a cheap system, I don't think it is a lower end system at all. It is feature packed with several things you wouldn't see in other more expensive brands, such as the great equilizer system and, oh yea BUILT IN 5.1 Surround Sound decoder, all what you need to do is get the speaker set and you have instant surround sound, no need for external receiver/decoder!
My favorite feature though -and the reason I decided to go for it- is that it can change region codes from the menu itself! This is a great feature for playing discs coming from other sides of the world. It also is firmware upgradeable via CDrs, and the web site seems to offer good support!
There are a couple of things missing in this unit, for example, the front LED display which shows the status of the movie, the other missing thing is the Audio In input in the back, such a great sound chip and decoder should have inputs so that other components (such as your VCR) can enjoy the same sound quality.
But bottom line is, this is a great unit and I highly recommend it!
