Yamakawa. An unknown but solid player for the price.
Pros
- can play multi-regions - supports PAL/NTSC - very affordable and solid dvd player
Cons
- wish it came in black. - no progressive scan
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Best bargain i've seen for a solid dvd player. It may not have the brand name but it makes up for it in features and performance.
I was able to pick up this gem at Fry's Electronics for only $39.99. It was originally $79.99 but Fry's frequently has this on sale, so wait for it.
I have never heard of Yamakawa before, until my brother showed me the 218s model at his house. It has features that you would normally find from an expensive DVD player with extras that you won't believe for such an inexpensive player.
I have played several of my region 2 and region 3 dvds on this and it looks pretty good. Picture quality is crisp and clear. Although I don't have a speaker system, the audio was pretty clear and good when played it on my Sony WEGA tv.
Cool features:
- 5.1 DTS
- Can play either PAL, NTSC, or Multi format dvd ( menu selectable )
- Can play multi-regions dvd. You need to input a key combination code into the remote to change regions but it will always play region 1. ie: If I changed the region code to 2, the dvd player can now play region 2 and region 1 dvds. If I change the region code to 3, it plays region 3 and region 1 dvds.
- Small compact form factor. Cool silver finish
- Multi language menu selection
- Can play CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, SVCD, MP3
- I've heard that this player supports firmware upgrades which could unlock Macrovision and Region Code features by default ( which means you don't have to use remote keycode ), but I haven't tried this yet.
- Supports S-Video, Component, and Coaxial output.
Cons:
- No progressive scan support.
- There seems to be 2 power settings: 1 for the player and 1 for the remote control. The power button on the player turns on the DVD player but if I press the power button on the remote it seems to go into low power mode.
- Unknown brand name. It's not a Sony or Panasonic, but I saw no difference in picture or sound quality when compared to my Panasonic DVD-RV32K.
This would make a great gift idea for any techie friends!
