Cons Poor sound and low volume from speakers. Pictures sometimes freezes. Poor durability
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Don't waste your money on this. Spend a bit more and get a better quality unit.
I was looking for a good value in a portable DVD player and I found this one at amazon.com for $110, with free shipping. I was hoping that this amount of money would purchase a basic machine of reasonable quality.

The customer reviews for this model at amazon.com varied between "Great!" and "junk", evidently depending on individual luck. The quality between units seems to vary greatly. I suspect that the quality control program at the factory doesn't involve much in the way of "burn-in" or testing of new units. I decided to roll the dice, but as a precaution I spent an extra $20 on a two-year extended warranty. If it dies after the manufacturer's warranty expires, I got my money's worth.

Strong points: Nice picture, easy to operate. Battery pack, AC power supply, patch cables and a serviceable set of headphones, included. The player looks and feels mechanically well made.

Weak points: Tinny sound and low volume; The speakers are only about an inch in diameter and sound like a very cheap transistor radio. At full volume in a quiet room, the speakers are barely loud enough. (Using the headphones, the sound and volume are good).

The picture may or may not freeze during viewing, depending on who knows what. Some discs play flawlessly, other stop a few times during the movie. (These same discs play fine on my computer's DVD drive). Doing a momentary fast reverse of the video will usually restart proper operation, so it is more of an annoyance than a big problem.

This machine could be a good value if you get it cheap and it doesn't suddenly die after a few hours of operation, as some of them reportedly do. Coby customer service also leaves much to be desired, I hear. My fingers are crossed on this one.

UPDATE: I ran between one and two dozen discs through the machine in the first month that I owned it, before the machine quit working. The freezing of the picture mentioned previously gradually became more frequent and the machine became more difficult to restart by reversing it. It became necessary to usually turn off and restart the machine, then fast forward to where the picture had frozen. This problem began to happen often enough to compromise the usefulness of the player. However, this was not what killed it. One day, the machine would not boot up and it was because it would no longer spin the disc. End of story.

My advice is to spend $50 or $100 more and get a better quality machine made by a reputable manufacturer.
