The Bottom Line:
This DVD player is sturdy, has great features and is able to withstand continued use during long road trips.
I had never heard of Coby before I got this portable DVD player, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. It turns out that I have been pleased with the quality and ease of use of this product.
My first experience with my Coby TF-DVD8500 Portable DVD Player was when we used it during a road trip. This was the perfect way to test this product out, as we had it going for almost 8 hours straight. It has an anti-skip system and I've found that it truly doesn't skip easily while going over bumps in the road. The picture is clear, as is the sound. The 8.5 inch swivel color widescreen is great for getting the best angle for multiple viewers to be able to see. There are 2 headphone jacks in case not everyone would like to listen. A pair of headphones was included. There is a headrest mounting bag, although we prefer to just set in on the middle console.
It wasn't hard at all to figure out how to set up and control this DVD player. All of the basic buttons are on the DVD player itself. These include power, volume, play/pause, stop, title, LCD mode, display, return, previous and next, setup, along with the arrow buttons. A great added accessory is the remote control. Although you are able to control features using the player, this is an added convenience. Who doesn't love a remote control?
It comes with both the car and regular charger. I was pleasantly surprised at how long the battery stays charged when in use. It is not necessary to keep it plugged in constantly while watching it. The cord on the car charger is long enough that when you have it plugged into the front it will stretch to the back with no problem.
Although we bought the portable DVD player for car rides, we have started using it inside the house occasionally. Sometimes the kids will want to watch a different show than we are, so we set it up for them. We can even be in the same room which is nice.
The only thing I would note as not being perfect is when you have the volume turned down low you can hear the DVD going around and around. I have noticed this a couple of times, but I have gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me. If you listen at a normal volume you do not hear it, so it is not an issue. I wouldn't say this is reason at all to decide against purchasing this particular model.
This product has stood up to road trips, car rides, kids, and long periods of use without fail. It is so nice to have it along so passengers can watch new DVDs or their old favorites.
