Ok here goes my following review. To help you understand where I am coming from and that I do have an understanding of the market I am also an owner of the HP Jorando, Philips Nino, and in the past I have owned 3 differnt versions of Palms all the way up to the Vx.
As always my review start out with the bad, which in this case is a very small section.
The Ugly
Price
You will pay ~ $50 - $100 more for this unit then any other off the shelf PocketPC on the market today (5/18/01). The reasons are simple, demand greatly exceeds supply.
Availability
As stated above this can be a tuff unit to get, not as difficult when I got mine last July but still a challenge. This is one of those few electronic items that you will frequently see for $50-$75 OVER MSRP.
The Good ?
Screen & Backlighting
In the case of the Ipaq it is a more a case of "side lighting" as it is not lit from the rear of the unit. I tried out all of the big 3 PocketPC's and there is simply no question at all, the Ipaq has the best screen / lighting on the market. You can read it in direct sunlight, you can read it in a pitch black room, and you can read it in everything in between. This is not the case of ANY other PocketPC on the market today.
Speed
A simple enough subsection. The Ipaq utilizes the Armstrong RISC processor and (to date) is the fastest PPC on the market.
Sound
Wow .. that is all I can say. The internal speaker isn't to bad, you can hear it with moderate back ground noise but it is a mono speaker after all. But plug headphones in and WHAM full stereo with excellent bass reproduction and superb volume levels. The HP and Casio units can not even begin to touch the sound reproduction of the Ipaq.
Expansion
The Ipaq excels in this area as well. It utilizes a unique system of "sleeves" to provide advanced functionality and expansion. You can purchase add-on sleeves for CF2, PCMCIA, and a host of other features. You will often see it critized for not including a built in CF slot. My rebuttal is "so what". For a mere $39 you can purchase the CF add-on sleeve and then you have a choice, either carry around the Ipaq without a sleeve, or add the sleeve and consider it a built in slot. The bottom line is the Ipaq has the ability to expand far beyond any other device.
Apperance
This is a point of much to debate, and I will leave it to you to decide. But since I am writing the review I will say that I find the device to be very sleek, and professional and fits right into my image as a high tech network administrator.
