As I listen to Manhattan Transfer?s rendition of A Nightingale Sang, I can?t help but wonder how these four little mini-cube speakers and seven-inch subwoofer can deliver such rich and astounding sound. The diminutive-sounding audio system of which I speak is none other than a genuine Cambridge Soundworks speaker setup, specifically, the FPS1000. When it can be had for less than $80 US, the four satellite, one subwoofer system delivers a bunch helpful features in addition to great sound. 65 watts of power are distributed as follows: 10 each for the satellite speakers, and 25 for the powered subwoofer. The subwoofer itself delivers clear bass sounds in the 60-100KHz range.
Designed to work in parallel with Creative Lab?s Soundblaster Live! sound card, the system takes full advantage of the Environmental Audio Effects (EAX) hardware, and delivers the sound with great gusto. Even if you don?t have a Soundblaster card, most other sound cards will be able to support the four-speaker configuration. As for features, Creative/Cambridge Soundworks provides two rear-speaker tripods, a full set of wire labels (front-left, rear-left, etc), and the option to mount the speakers on the wall, monitor, or desk. It is a truly versatile setup- the speakers are magnetically shielded so that they can be mountain near or directly on the monitor or TV.
The three-inch mini-cubes truly deliver clear, responsive sound, even at the highest volume and registers. The bass from the subwoofer is low and defined; it packs power seen on many larger and more expensive setups. For eighty bucks, this audio setup is a steal, and it?s one of the easiest systems to set up and start using.
