Digital Quality Sound Without the Price of Digital Speakers.

Pros Affordable, digital quality audio, balance control, high powered
Cons Not exactly digital, no centre speaker, tripods are optional, bass control.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  You don't have to pay a fortune just to have digital quality audio, the FPS 1800 allows you to do that.
For many people who would like to have powerful speaker systems nearly capable of producing digital sound, but hate to really pay a premium on digital speakers, the FPS 1800 by Cambridge Soundworks really makes any speaker in its class down and defeated. 4.1 speaker systems like the FPS 1800 were designed for computer gaming, audio and video. The FPS 1800 is really based on the ever popular PC Works Four Point Surround (FPS 1000) speaker system by Cambridge Soundworks, except that the FPS 1800 adds a few tweaks to make it much more powerful than the PC Works FPS (FPS 1000) speaker system, they included highly conductive copper wire to transfer even richer audio than the PC Works FPS speaker system or the FPS 1000, the same wire that is basically used by the home theatre speaker systems in your home (if equipped).

Contents

The speaker system included a subwoofer, 4 satellites, cables, manual and even volume controller on a dedicated remote. Each of the satellites and the subwoofer are magnetically shielded to place the speakers close to the screen (unlike most of Altec Lansing!|s speaker system subwoofers that aren!|t magnetically shielded.). The magnetic shielding is important, because it prevents your display from producing distorted images, your hard drive to be damaged by magnets and yes, even your data storage is vulnerable to a magnet.

Use of the Speakers

Installing the speaker was easy and even a senior citizen or a child can do this. But do supervise the child if you!|re going to let them do it. Basically the set up for the speakers is like the home theatre speaker system, but it!|s much easier, because everything goes to the back of the subwoofer. The subwoofer acts as a hub for the system for easy and convenient access for the plugs and controls.

Once you!|re finished setting the system up, in no time at all you!|ll enjoy one of the best audio that you!|ve ever had in your life. I mean that sincerely, by the way how the trebles are undistorted and crisp, the bass is just powerful enough to really shake the area surrounded by the speakers. With the balance controls on the remote control, you can control where the sound should really be concentrated on, especially if you wanted some special effects for the surround satellites, since most people are likely to place these satellites distantly from the main satellites. This means no more uneven sound distribution when you!|re placing your speakers and you don!|t have to move any of the speakers closer to each other achieve a much better sound.

The satellites are very compact, but the subwoofer is slightly bulky, but many will be able to fit these on the floor underneath their desk. To enhance bass production from the subwoofer, it!|s recommended to place the subwoofer near a corner of the room or on the corner of the table. Since the subwoofer is magnetically shielded, you can even place the subwoofer underneath the desk where the monitor is sitting on. With the wall mounting kit provided, you can even put the speakers on a fixed location and save even more space than if you!|re placing the satellites on the desk, especially the two main satellites.

As with a majority of speaker systems, don!|t really expect software to enhance the audio quality produced from your audio card. But the speaker system is already delivering adequate power of 22 watts (RMS) for the subwoofer and 8 watts (RMS) for each satellite, totaling a whopping 54 watts it really makes the speaker system unnecessary to even have an enhancement software.

However the bass control for the speakers is located on the back of the subwoofer which isn't an easy reach if you constantly have a different taste in bass periodically. And if the computer speakers is used by mulitple users, it's even inconvenient to get down on the floor and readjust the bass.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the FPS 1800 could really replace your unreliable speaker systems from generic markets and it could really even replace many of the excellent 2.1 speaker systems (2 speakers and a subwoofer). If you!|re thinking of replacing your speakers with near digital quality audio, without really paying a premium price and attain excellent reliability at the same time, the FPS 1800 is really a worthwhile nominee for your shopping list. At a price of as little as $60 on a refurbished set (about $100 for a newly manufactured set), these speakers really deliver value if you!|re looking to have digital quality audio without the premium. Combine that with the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1, DVD-ROM and/or CD Rewriter, you have yourself an entertainment system for your computer. And it!|s not just for computers though, as you can still use the speaker system on your MP3 audio jukebox like your Creative Nomad Jukebox for example and replace a 100-disc CD changer.
