Pros MegaWorks 510D speakers: Outstanding sound quality initially. Marsha from Inside Sales
Cons Angie in RMA. Shoddy customer service; lack of access helpful staff 510D's integrity
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Steer clear of these speakers -- so defective they were recalled & replaced with THX 5.1 550 in the U.K.
My MegaWorks 510D speakers delivered as promised: awesome clarity, range, detail and depth. That was until the subwoofer started buzzing, then burned out completely after roughly 20 hours of very mild use (didn't want to wake the wife or baby).

Customer service was a joke -- a really, really bad joke. Angie, the RMA customer service agent, offered me a few options, none of which included a replacement or refund. "That item has been discontinued," was all she offered lamely. This was after spending $5 on shipping materials and roughly $25 in UPS shipping fees to Stillwater, Oklahoma (on top of the initial $300 for the speakers). She offered only discounted prices on "upgrade" speaker sets, which I rejected at first. Not wanting to have nothing to show for my $330 investment, I later settled for the THX 6.1 650s at $164. Angie also promised me they'd be shipped free of charge via 2-day air immediately. The "2-day air" special ended up taking roughly a month, even after repeated phone calls to RMA & Angie directly. Part of the hang-up involved Angie transposing two digits on my credit card; lost nearly two weeks on that clerical error alone. Further, when I requested Angie's supervisor's number, she refused to give it to me, stalling and stonewalling me at every turn. I became so frustrated that I called several of Creative's domestic numbers before I could find anyone willing to help me. By the time my replacement speakers finally arrived, Creative had lowered the price of the THX 650s (upgraded replacement speakers) on their website by $100. In summary, I'd paid about $500 and several hours of my valuable time -- and a boatload of unnecessary aggravation -- for a set of $300 speakers.

Steamed? You bet. Shop Creative in the future? Maybe. Read on.

Pros: Long Version

MegaWorks 510D speakers: Outstanding sound quality initially.

Marsha, the customer service agent from Inside Sales, who is in no way connected to the RMA department, nor is she responsible for dealing with RMA customers like me. Marsha pretty much dropped what she was doing and investigated my situation immediately and called me back within the hour. Although she pursued my case vigorously, she came up with nothing more than what I'd been told by Angie. However, her positive attitude and genuine concern placated me to the point where I could get past Angie's maddening indifference and negative attitude. Marsha, unlike Angie, returned my calls quickly and did everything within her power to get me some answers. I was so impressed with her customer service -- for someone having an RMA problem, a responsibility of an entirely different department/division -- I wrote a letter on her behalf to the head of Director of Human Resources in Fremont. And I hate writing.

Cons: Long Version

Angie in RMA. Her insolence and indifference may cost Creative my future business.

Creative's shoddy overall customer service; lack of access to people willing to help.

The MegaWorks 510Ds. More disappointing than the speakers' integrity & durability was the way Creative/Angie handled my problem. Aside from Marsha, who earned a well-deserved "A" in my book, my other experiences with Creative customer service earned an "F."

Final Insult? Creative U.K. replaced the 510Ds with the newer MegaWorks THX 5.1 550s, and "as a gesture of goodwill towards 'end-user' customers for the inconvenience caused," Creative also provided a MuVo 128MB portable MP3 player free of charge. For details, point your browser to:
