I just got a PC of my very own. (Whoo Hooo! My dream come true!!!) I call it a Frankenputer because it was put together by a friend. He revved it up real nice for me, and it has a bunch of neat and spiffy things it will do that I have no idea how to run. But it did not come with speakers.
I shopped around a little bit because I am on a very tight budget, and the best product I found for my price range right now are the Soundblaster SBS10. They just plug into the back of the PC and are good to go. There is not a volume control on the speaker itself, but the master volume control panel of the PC does just fine, other than it is an extra step to do when you want to turn it up or down.
The quality of the sound amazed me from the start. They are fantastic and very suitable to a novice user. Sure they are the "no frills" line from Soundblaster and one day I may want to upgrade them, but I doubt it unless something happens and they break.
They are very durable, and for basic use they put out a sound that by far surpasses their regular retail price of $15.00. I managed to get mine on sale for $8.00.
Creative has several levels of quality speakers available, and they seem to be priced affordably. I am very happy with what I have, and will purchase Soundblaster again with no hesitation.
