Creative Technology Vado Hot Pink Pocket Camcorder

Pros Easy to use. Small to store. Quick replay. Inexpensive. Great for documenting events, accidents, rehearsals
Cons Minimal software. Minimal video quality.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:

For recording rehearsals or documenting accident scenes. Not what you'd want for important events.

I remember when my father made home movies. You shot a reel and got what you got. The cost of developing meant that the times when movies were made were seldom. Then came the video cameras. They began as large and bulky. They required tape. No longer did we have to have things developed, but the size of the unit meant that the camera was only there on special occasions and on vacation.

I now own a Vado ultra compact and ultra lightweight camcorder. The Flip came first, but the Vado is smaller than even that. It's smaller than my iPhone and should fit unobtrusively into a man's shirt pocket. For me, It fits into a small pocket in my purse.

It has an integrated USB connector that allows it to connect easily to the computer to download the programs it contains for dealing with the videos on it, charge its batteries, and download the videos I shoot. The built in software lets you upload videos straight to YouTube.

This is barebones video technology for under $100. In truth, I went looking for the Vado on the advice of a friend and included the word discount in my search. I found this bubblegum pink version for $45 (including shipping). It seems that there are people who won't buy a pink camcorder. I found male friends who would rather spend the extra money to have a less colorful version. (It's available in gray.)

The Vado's body design is simple. There is a power button on the side. Below the LED display screen is a white button to hit to record. Hit it again, and it will stop recording. You can immediately playback or dump the video. There is no optical zoom, no focus adjustment and no shutter speed control on the video. The only thing it does offer is 2x digital zoom.

The Vado records up to 2GB of internal on non-removable flash memory. The battery pack is removable, but it is recharges while the Vado is plugged in. It lasts almost two and a half hours. I rarely find myself running it that long. The Vado also has an AV-out port if you want to watch your videos on a TV. This is actually why I got mine. As a magician, it's helpful for me to watch myself practicing, rehearsing and performing. The Vado allows me to have a camera on my person whenever an impromptu occasion arises to perform. It's also great for seeing what the audience is going to see.

Because I carry this with me, it would be good in case of an accident for documenting what happened. Happily, I haven't had to use it for that. I hope I never do.

For my utilitarian purposes, the Vado is terrific. However, the video quality is less than stellar. What's fine on an LED screen or a YouTube screen is not good blown up to television size. It uses a 1/4 inch VGA CMOS sensor to record an image at 640x480 pixels. The Vado does not work well in low light situations. This is definitely not going to work at night.

The internal software on the camcorders is as sparse as the Vado. It assists with coping footage to a computer or getting things uploaded to YouTube. It doesn't allow for editing or adjustments. In that regard the Flip is far superior. It is also worth noting that the Vado is not Mac compatible.

I am really happy with the Vado for my purposes, but given the choice, I would probably have spent a bit more on the Flip. I have a friend with one of those. It has better video quality and better software for dealing with footage. I really am not fond of the pink color, but I can live with it. More importantly, the guys won't touch it because of it's color. I'll never have to worry about them wanting to borrow it.
