Pros Good pictures from a small, inexpensive, 4.1 megapixel camera
Cons Proprietary memory stick, minor usability complaints
Recommended it? Yes

One of the most attractive deals in digital cameras these days is the Sony Cybershot DSC-S40. It's an enticing package of good features, small size, and known brand, all rolled up with a ribbon of low price tags. I paid $130 for mine at Sears (no fuss, no muss, no nonsense of online merchants)... Read full review »

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S40 4.1-Megapixel Digital Camera - Inexpensive, Compact and Fast

bydkozin Aug 30, 2005

Pros Fast, compact, inexpensive, easy to use, good picture quality, well-built, AF assist
Cons Small LCD, no A/V, fixed aperture, noisy ISO 400, Memory Stick, no manual mode
Recommended it? Yes

After trying out and being slightly disappointed with the Fuji FinePix A345, I decided to give a slightly more expensive Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S40 a try. I got it for $158, which was only $20 more than the A345 cost me. At such a low price, this Sony has a small 1.5-inch LCD screen vs. 1.8 on Fuji,... Read full review »

Fast small camera with wider than average lens. Low-light images very poor.

Pros Fast autofocus. Sharp pictures. Great VGA movies. Semi-wide angle. Great AA battery life.
Cons Low light photos are noisy, lack detail. Small screen font. Expensive memory sticks...
Recommended it? Yes

I was looking for a pocket-sized digicam with a wide angle lens (28mm equivalent) for landscapes and indoor photos. I also wanted something that took standard AA batteries.

That turns out to be impossible. As of this date (January 2006) the only pocket-sized cameras that reach 28mm are... Read full review »

Excellent Entry-Level Digicam

Pros Easy to operate, minimal delay, many controls.
Cons Pictures too dark @ default, LCD looks better than on computer, noisy lowlight.
Recommended it? Yes

I have the privilege of using many cameras in my line of work. From entry-level cameras such as this one to digital SLR cameras and "news cameras" ($15,000+). I'll tell you from the outset that for the money this camera is smokin'!

The Sony DSC-S40 that I had hands-on with was a gift my... Read full review »

Excellent entry level camera

Pros Compact, super battery life, pro-quality lens, very useable movie mode, focus assist lamp.
Cons Small LCD, minimal accessories, no zoom when recording movies
Recommended it? Yes

Too often products will try and do too much and generally be mediocre at everything including it's core function. Not so with this camera. For $190 you get a compact, versatile camera with features that belie it's price.

At 4" wide by 2" high by 1 1/4" deep this camera is very compact... Read full review »

Good while it lasted...

Pros Stylish, fairly easy to use.
Cons Consider it an expensive disposable camera, and don't count on it to last.
Recommended it? No

...but it lasted just a week past the expiration of the warranty. I am an infrequent camera user and research persuaded me that this one would serve the purpose well. Which it did -- briefly. Shortly after I registered the purchase, Sony sent me a solicitation for an extended warranty, at a cost of... Read full review »

Sony DSC-S40 - acceptable Point & Shoot alternative

Pros Small Size Integrated Lens Cap Memory Stick Capability Easy Video Taking
Cons Overpowered Flash Average Lens Quality Tiny Power Button Awkward Focus Delay

A few years ago I spent $800 and purchased what at that time was one of the top of the line digital cameras, and Olympus C-3030 3.3 megapixel digital camera. I loved it, however as the years passed I found that the Olympus was getting old and bulky.

I decided to pick up a relatively... Read full review »

Buy a Canon instead

byjimsocal Nov 1, 2006

Pros Lightweight, small, 4.1mp
Cons Snapshots are often blurry - camera does not focus quick enough. Not great photos...
Recommended it? No

No, I am not in any way affiliated with Canon, it's just that I have owned both and the Canon is a far better camera.

I bought the Sony only because I have an old Canon (A40) which is relatively heavy and bulky by today's standards and I wanted something I could more easily stick in my... Read full review »

Pros Quick to learn, easy to use
Cons The mannual was a little hard to read

I'm not sure who he is, but his name is on my camera.

Please note that this review is written for beginner user, not for someone who actually knows what a mega pixel is.

This is my first digital camera, and I have to say that I didn't have much experience with them before buying... Read full review »

Incredible camera for the money, not typical of Sony!

bybilldawg May 20, 2005

Pros EVERYTHING! Sleek design, great stills, MPEGs, manual settings, button layout, LCD, Sony...
Cons Memory Sticks relatively expensive, zooming unchangeable during MPEG recording,...
Recommended it? Yes

While it has long been my opinion that Sony makes electronics of above-average quality, it has also long been my opinion that much of the extra cost of Sony products vs. competitors is paying merely for the Sony brand name. This camera is an extreme exception! The Sony DSC-S40 is an awesome camera,... Read full review »
