A Made in Japan camera -good value and features for the price
Pros
Price, big LCD screen, solid feel, good pictures, Made in Japan
Cons
$$ expensive memory sticks, doesn't save rotated pics
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Good battery life and features at a great price. Made in Japan a real rarity in this day and age (this luxury is usually only for hi end items)
Just got this camera at Staples Business Depot. Regular price $319 Cdn then sale of $229 + additional coupon savings on line of $30 so net price was a great deal at $199 Cdn (or $160 US) + tax of course.
So for this price, it's great value given these good features:
1) 4 MP (more than enough for most point and shooter) with some room for cropping.
2) nice large 2 inch display - very clear and vibrant
3) battery life is great for a digital camera. Esp with rechargeables. Definite advantage
4) Nice solid feel to the camera (not plasticy hollow)
5) Made in Japan (not China/Mexico/Indonesia)
6) relatively fast shutter (very little lag compared to other cameras). This is crucial esp in digital cameras as you always lose the shot because of the shutter lag.
7) $20 coupon towards any accessory on line at sony (so you can pick up a memory card of $59 for $39!!!
8) Pretty crisp pictures and colour tones look fine on printed shots
9) Can really see the auto focus working on the LCD screen
10) Price - good value (given my discounts)
11) uses standard AAs ( good if emergency or you don't have to pay premiums for Lithium or funny shaped ones)
Here are some of the downfalls:
1) connection cord to PC is on the bottom of camera so you can't stand up the camera
2) Can't simply rotate pictures you took vertically. Even if you did, they do not save that way on you PC. This is important when you watch JPEGs from a dvd player. Its a pain to do them on a software thru your computer. Easier off the camera but this camera doesn't save it that way.
3) Memory stick cost 2x more than other types of cards. This is a big factor that you must consider in the overall price of the camera. With a 256MB stick you can only hold about 118 shots (approx 1.8MB/picture) so you will definitely need 512MB but at almost $90 that's almost 1/2 the price of the camera!!! (SD or Compact Flash cards would only cost $40!!! Of course you can look on ebay for one at a better price but a used/refurbished memory stick is risky and you have no recourse!!! I heard that SanDisk stick often have trouble with Sony products. I'd recommend sticking with a Sony Pro Stick!
4) Must copy and paste over files from a removeable G: drive rather than auto unload like other software
5) Shutter speeds ranges are narrow compared to other competitors
6) Size is normal for digital cameras but maybe a tad larger than its competitor (Nikon Coolpix/Canon). Remember too small doesn't mean better. Sometimes I found too small is worse esp with a camera/camcorder esp if you have big hands as it often means smaller button/screens/displays. A more solid feel with added weight sometimes gives a more stable hand and therefore better pictures. So although it may be a drawback it could also be a good thing. But no one can argue the advantage that size may have in terms of carrying it around.
Competitors:
Yes, Nikon and Canon cameras do have slightly better reviews but not worth paying almost $100 more given my deal that I got as that's 50% of the camera. Still does a great job. Sure is better than my previous HP 2 MP camera. Too bad I can't reuse my memory card.
Summary:
Overall a great camera at a good price. No sense paying top dollars for the latest (eg 5 or 7 MP). Just buy a new one after 2 years esp given this price.
