Minimalist performance for a small price

I needed to replace a badly blown 2.1 system for my desktop PC, so I purchased CA's 2.1 CA32 system from a box store for less than retail on sale. I listen to MP3's while working on the PC, and get alot of use out of the speakers. This 3 speaker system looks promising with a subwoofer, headphone jack in the left speaker, volume control, and high-tech appearance. I was not able to hear the system in the store prior to purchase. I really did not expect much with the price I paid and figured I was getting a bargain.
Setup was a snap. A small power supply and included color-coded cables are impossible to connect improperly unless you are really trying! The side speakers have a flat-panel look that will be right at home next to today's flat monitors. The sub was not very impressive with a 2.5" (yes, two and a half inch subwoofer!) speaker downfiring in a smallish box.
My meager expectations were let down with this system. The side speakers are tinny and do not replicate well. They offer no depth and look much, much better than they sound. The subwoofer does little to accentuate the sound other than offering an occasional "click" when a "thump" was expected. Easily overdriven by the 14 watt power supply, the system does not do well at higher volumes, either.
For basic, and I mean BASIC sound, I would stick to the lesser priced 2-speaker system and forego the sub, which does nothing anyway. For about the cost of dinner for four at the drive through window it's hard to deny the allure of this techy-looking setup... that is until you hear it. I was initially inclined to return it, but literally cringed at the thought of having to repack the product which seemed to double in size when removed from the box. I'll probably run it until it breaks and replace it with something capable of better performance.
