Dependable and Portable 54g USB Network Adapter

Pros Tiny, 2 USB connection options, fast speed, great range, portable
Cons Might be lost if not very careful due to its size
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  An overall good value for a portable, reliable, and wonderfully fast wireless USB network adapter.
After moving into a new townhouse, I needed a solution to connect my desktop to a wireless network, as running wires was simply not feasible in my new building. I took a trip up to the local Best Buy, and did a very quick comparison between the various brands of wireless adapters. Since the price of a PCI adapter and the USB alternative is nearly the same, I figured that the USB portability (as well as ability to better direct toward a signal) would be a major plus. The D-link adapter was mid-range in price, if I recall (at $65), but there was a $20 mail in rebate that made the sale worthwhile.

I took the unit home, assembled it (extremely basic, as it only consists of the tiny adapter itself and an optional USB extension cradle) and installed the drivers. The card was instantly recognized afterward and I have yet to have any driver issues (Windows XP SP2).

I opted for using the USB extension cradle to get better reception and to not have to worry about leaving the adapter plugged into the invisible and potentially dangerous back of my computer. The cord is nice and long (about 3.5 feet or so), and you can always opt to just plug in the 2 inch adapter directly into a USB 2.0 or 1.1 port.

The performance for me has been excellent, even though I am accessing my friend's router about 3 units down, I get "Low" reception from Windows although it is a steady 54mbps connection! In other words, even at the far distance, I have a steady and fast connection.

All in all, I was impressed with the design and functionality of this rather small but powerful network adapter. It comes with all of the usual warranties that a product of its type would have, and these are frequently on sale at your local electronics store.
