The Bottom Line:
Fantastic reception and awesome design make it a winner.
When you open the box you find a small manual for installation. A CD with the software on it. A weighted base and the Wireless USB Access point itself.
The WUA can be used with or without the base. I am a student and use this in my home and in my apartment. In my home I am on the same floor as my Linksys Router so I use it without the base. But in my apartment I am 2 floors away from the router so I put the base on the floor of my room and plug it in there where it gets a better signal. The WUA2340 is a bit wide so when it's directly plugged into the computer and there is another usb port next to it it will overlap that space making the other port inaccessible
You install the drivers first though pretty basic software. I usually use the Windows built in Zero Configuration utility to find and access my network so I don't know much about the software that came with the unit. Although I did use the pushbutton configuration mode for my Linksys router in my house just to try it. After you install the drivers you can plug in the unit. Windows detects the unit and the BRIGHT orange light will begin to flash at the base of the unit. The unit DOES get hot. I've read other reviews where the unit looses the signal but that hasn't been my experience. I Use a Linksys Router at home and a Belkin Router at my apartment. I use the same SSID and Password at both places so it's pretty seamless moving from one area to the other.
I originally purchased this unit for my older IBM Thinpad R31 however when I upgraded to an Acer Aspire One, I wasn't pleased with the weak internal WIFI so I moved it over to my aspire by downloading the drivers from the D-link Website. A VAST AND MAJOR IMPROVEMENT.
I gave my wife my old laptop with a Cisco Aironet CB21AG-K9 Laptop adapter card. She started complaining that it took forever for pages to load. I purchased a second WUA-2340 viola, her problem ended. But because of the location of her USB port (REAR of the laptop), she does use the base.
At home I share my laptop drives with other devices in the house and I use VNC through this device. Since my Acer Aspire One doesn't have a CDRW or DVD-RW I mapped the one on my desktop and use it through the wireless network with no problems. Now one thing I don't like about the adapter is that while D-link was nice enough to provide a cap, The cap doesn't fit snugly on the top of the unit for storage so it's quite easy to loose the cap. Not a big deal but it seems they spent a lot of money on the design of this thing. Storage for the cap would have been nice.
I have been using these now for about 3 months and I'm very very happy with the performance and value. Yesterday my mother called and said she was going to be installing a second computer in the kitchen. I recommended she get one of these.
You'll spend anywhere from 39.99 to 49.99 but I've seen them as high as 79.99. Shop around. Since these are 802.11b/g and we're up to N the price should be dropping. Ebay is the cheapest I've seen them.
