Burning Smell - Broken after 4 years
Pros
Smoked, but did not burn the house down.
Cons
Is broken after 4 years. Now junk.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Do not buy under any circumstances. Fire hazard.
Purchased the GE TV new at Best Buy for $1000 brand new in December of 2004. Now 4 and a quarter years later it has stopped working. Shuts itself off if you try to turn it on. The screen is completely black , no picture whatsoever, even for a minute. Looked at the back to make sure the wires were plugged in and smelled smoke, twice. Well that was enough, I have to write it off, I don't want a fire.
I thought GE was a good name, I guess not. One reason I picked it was because I thought at least GE would probably be decent quality. I guess not. I would have been better to go with some unknown name. It's hard to imagine a tv would be junk after just 4 years!!
Another thing that wasn't so good was that the sides of the screen had burn in, and I had the contrast way down the whole time. Really not a well made tv. And I was trying to buy American too, even though it was assembled in Mexico. It will be a long time before I trust GE for anything.
If you look on the GE website, you can't find any evidence they ever made televisions. There is no support, no manuals - no mention whatsoever that they ever manufactured it. TVs are not in their list of products anywhere you can find. Pretty much like a fly by night manufacturer - except this is GE! You would think they would care about their reputation, but I guess not.
