Snapping Off Shots With My DXG-308
Pros
Small design, lightweight, good price, easy to use, acceptable quality
Cons
Poor quality in low light environments, no viewfinder lcd screen only, some unusable shots
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
DXG-308 is a good starter cam at 3.0 mega pixels, probably unusable to photo professionals.
Thanks to the wonderful folks at Epinions.com I now have a DXG-308 3.0 Mega pixels digital camera. I wasn't expecting such an elaborate gift as a Christmas bonus but I am very appreciative. So my gift to Epinions.com is writing a review on the camera!
Unfortunately this is my first real hands on experience with a digital camera, so it's taken awhile to learn how everything works. Thankfully DXG provides a complete manual with a quick start guide, USB 1.1 cable, and even 2 AA batteries. Without these additions I would probably be lost! So with that said let's get onto the review and please excuse the lack of technical terms. :P

The DXG-308 has 4 different resolutions ranging from the lowest (1280x960) to the highest (2976x2232). In addition to various resolutions you can also set the quality to fine or normal. Using the default built in memory with fine quality, you can take around 50 pictures at 1280x960 resolution and 10 pictures at 2976x2232 resolution. If you switch over to normal quality, those numbers are nearly doubled, although picture quality is seriously effected. The booklet only says 32 and 6, which is a bit low compared to the actual number of images I've been able to save.
In my experiences thus far with the DXG-308, I've stuck to 1280x960 resolution with fine quality. This setting is pretty much the default for the camera when you first turn it on, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The 1280x960 resolution pictures come out in .jpeg format sizing up around 300kb in size. The 2976x2232 resolution pictures size up around 1500Kb in size.
Nearly 60% of the pictures taken are usable while the other 40% are worthless. This is not a very good ratio but considering the low price and standards of the camera, it's to be excepted. One major downfall is the design of shutter button, which has a 2 mode setup. When pressed half way the shutter goes into auto focus, so that you can center you shot and setup everything before you actually take a shot. When fully pressed the camera will then take a shot. Because of the tricky shutter button design, you will find yourself tilting the camera while taking a shot which results in blurry or fuzzy pictures.
Unfortunately this camera requires a massive amount of lighting in order to get a clean quality shot. If you were to take a shot in a poorly light bedroom, restaurant or concert, the pictures will come out very dark. If you plan on taking shots in an environment similar to the ones listed above, be sure to bring along a 100000 watt flood light. Any other well light situation, primarily outside, will not be a problem for this camera.
Movies
The DXG-308 also had movie making capabilities, although the output is very poor. Just like taking pictures, you need to be in a well light environment... like outside... otherwise your movie will be complete darkness. All movies are saved at 512x384 resolution in .avi format around 12fps. Using the default built in memory you can record for about 1 minute. There is no built in microphone or extra plug-in for a microphone device, so this camera takes strictly image only.
The DXG-308 also doubles as a pc camera which is powered by the 5V USB connection. This of course helps save on battery usage. Just like taking pictures and recording movies, you need to be in a well light environment. That means no late darkroom peep shows with this camera. Pc camera mode works at 640x480 - 10fps and 320x240 - 15fps.
Flash
When taking pictures there are 4 different flash options: flash off, flash on, flash on with redeye detection. Using the flash feature in poorly light environments is also quite tricky. If there are any reflective materials in your shot, more than likely the flash will bounce back and ruin it. You have to stand in front of a solid structure to get a clean picture. The recycle time can be slow, around 10-15 seconds with ISO 100.
Storage
The default built in memory is only 16Mb, which is a fair amount of storage for any average photography. There is a SD card slot (MMC compatible) which supports storage from 8Mb to 512Mb. This little slot is located inside the battery compartment so there's no chance of losing your extra storage card. As mentioned above the default built in memory wields the following numbers:
- 1280x960 fine image : about 50 pictures
- 1280x960 normal image : about 100 pictures
- 2976x2232 fine image : about 10 pictures
- 2976x2232 normal image : about 20 pictures
- 512x384 video : about 80 seconds at 12fps
Other Features
- Lens : 9.61mm
- Image Sensor : 3.3 mega pixels CMOD sensor
- Focus : F/3.0
- Sensitivity : ISO 100
- White Balance : auto, sun, tungsten, florescent
- Storage : 16Mb built in, addons up to 512Mb SD/MMC
- Resolutions : 4 modes from 1280x960 to 2976x2232
- Zoom : 4x zoom with 10 steps
- Self-timer : 10 second delay
- PC Interface : USB 1.1
Installation and connection with a computer is super easy if you have Windows XP. Simply connect the camera to a USB port and Windows installs everything for you from the drivers included on the CDROM disk. There is also a TV-OUT plug for NTSC/PAL selectable systems.
Recommendation
The DXG-308 is best suited for the average soccer mom and family gatherings who shared pictures online or over email. The overall design of the camera is small, sleek and simple, and perfect candidate for family outings, camping, quick getaways and other on the move locations. Because of the lighting issues with the LCD screen and final outputs, this is definitely not a professional style camera by any means. The features on this model are consistent with its users. Don't expect to get a job working for the paparazzi. For only $75.00 you get what you pay for.
If your looking for the best camera on the market, steer far away from the DXG-308. If you're on a budget or just need to get your feet wet in the world of digital cameras, this is a good choice. Just make sure you have plenty of flashlights with you at all times, just in case (ha).
