The Bottom Line:
But it. Best features for price. Watch out for Dell chat support and long phone queues.
A previous review of the Dell 1600n hit the nail on the head. Rather than rehash details of that full and detailed review, just refer to it at http://www.epinions.com/content_169348927108.
I had a couple things to add:
1) The referred review wisely suggested that you set up one PC in your home network with a USB connection to the Dell 1600n so that you can do high-res scanning (vs max 300dpi resolution on a "network" scan). I also would suggest that even on that USB-connected PC that you install *both* "personal" (USB direct) and "network" drivers so that can do quick-and-easy network-based printing and scanning which is much faster as well have the high-res (600dpi) scanning and PaperPort and OCR capabilities you get with the scanner directly-attached. However, you MUST install the "personal" driver first and then install the "network" driver second. If you do it the other way around as I did, the "personal" install fails and you don't PaperPort and the advanced "personal" features.
2) To figure out what went wrong I used Dell's chat support at www.dell.com. Bad idea. Five (count them) times I waited until the icon indicated a printer specialist was available to chat and each time, the person I got in India asked me for a bunch of info only to tell me that they were a systems (PC) specialist and couldn't help with my printer problem. They all referred me to an 800 live support line to call which I did and then went on hold for about an hour before a real person came online. That real person was not a printer expert but within 5 mins pulled a level 3 support person onto the call and that person figured the problem out in minutes (asked me to uninstall all drivers and reinstall "personal" first then "network" (see #1).
All-in-all, I'm very happy with the printer. It's in standby and powers up and prints and scans quickly. I access it from my work laptop of two family home PC's. Very nice printer. Great quality. Recommend it.
