The Bottom Line:
Buy this monitor. Great price for a 17" LCD. Excellent image quality.
I just got this monitor a few days ago. My 17" CRT was on its last legs and I decided to get a new one. I was not even considering an LCD monitor, because I didn't think one would fit into my budget. But then I saw the E171FP on the Dell website for $450 - 10% off - $40 coupon = $365... a steal!! So I ordered the monitor and it arrived less than a week later.
Install was simple. Plug in the analog connector, plug in the power cord, turn monitor on, turn computer on. Then, tell Windows (I use Win 98) to install the drivers from the CD that comes with the monitor.
Image quality is amazing if you've never owned an LCD monitor. It's way better than any CRT I've ever used. Colors are vibrant; response times are fast. The "ghosting" problem that some people have noticed with other LCD monitors is nearly absent. I've only noticed a slight wobble when scrolling text. But DVD's look great, as do 3D video games... surprising since things tend to move really fast in most of the games I play. I have a P4 1.4GHz system with 384 MB RAM and a GeForce4 Ti4200 video card.
It is hard to find anything negative to say about this monitor, but I haven't had it that long. So far, so good. It doesn't have a DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connector, but that isn't a big deal to me and it would probably only be a concern for the most ardent technophiles... I think the image from the analog connector looks fine. One thing that I didn't like was the 3-year limited warranty: In year 1, Dell will repair or replace the monitor if it fails. In years 2 and 3, Dell will provide replacement parts on an exchange basis for parts that fail.
