Decent Home Office Printer
Prior to owning this printer, I had a Brother HL1440 laser printer which was OK for my purposes at home. However, I was given the opportunity to work with the Dell 1700 at my workplace for a year while I filled in for an employee on leave of absence. I decided to buy one to replace the Brother... Great Buy! Little slow out of the gate.
I recently purchased this printer because I had a coupon from Dell, and I have recently sworn off inkjets.
I paid about $70.00 US for it, and if it were not for that fact I might have picked up a different brand.
Anyway I had been searching for a new printer for a while. I...

Basic, overpriced printer. Better lasers easily found
This Dell is one of several laser printers that I own. While it performs smoothly and reliably, it fails to provide several key features that the competition has at a comparable or lower price.
The printer is very basic. It is well-suited for text documents and charts. If you attempt to...

Dell makes great computers and one lousy printer
I bought the Dell 1700 because it was a Dell. Everyone one of my computers, at home or work, that I have ever owned were and are made by Dell. I will buy Dell computers in the future. I will never again buy a printer with the name "Dell" on it.
The problems described on this site happened to...

Good for the home...
The Dell 1700 is a dependable laser if you're tired of paying through the nose for inkjet consumables. It takes a little too long to get going, but when it does it spits out at a rapid pace. Noisy when operating, it does fall asleep but will "wake up" every hour or so and scare the wits out of you... Read full review »
Cheap to Buy, Cheap to Own
I've had one for about a month. It's mediocre at best. I had to put a piece of tape on the top front where the front meets the top because the first sheet always catches in the crack unless you flip up the extension for legal size paper. Also, if the instructions to load the driver are not followed... Read full review »
Dose not Last very long
I bought three of them for the office. They were easy to setup. Had to replace the drum with every other cartridge which increases the cost per page. Two of them developed a paper feed problem within a year. Now the feed arm does not drop down to push the paper from the try. My search on the web... Read full review »
Horrible disappointment, extremely prone to paper jams
I was looking for a good quality laser printer, and I was willing to pay a good bit of money for one. Dell has a fairly good reputation for their computers, and I was looking for a company that sold quality products and had good support. I purchased the 1700 based on its features and price, both... Awful printer
I have used HP printers for years and never experienced as much trouble as with this one.
First, it is very noisy: when it prints, one can have a conversations in a 20 yards radius. Moreover, it makes periodic noises at arbitrary times. Makes me jump every time it does it.

Great for printing checks
Contrary to a few other negative reviews, I've found this to be the fastest jam-free laser I've ever used in my offices. Also found a website that can deliver magnetic toner cartridges overnight for this printer. checksnet.com sells a MICR toner cartridge that is also filled with triple the amount... Read full review »
