Dell M783 17 in. -- another CRT monitor?

Pros Nice color reproduction
Cons Large body
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A nice 17-in. unit for the boss unwilling to spend a bit more on a flat screen.
I work in a corporation that does not yet believe in the ease of use of LCD monitors; hence all the displays are CRT technology. One such model is the Dell M783, which lies on my desk.

-: Display :-

The Dell M783 has very good color reproduction. I read the news online during my lunch break, and photos are accurately reproduced without any blur between colors. Graphics are sharp and impressing, and text is clear and easy to read.

Running at 75 Hz, there's no noticeable flicker (which I'm very sensitive to), and graphics are refreshed on the screen with excellent speed -- the one characteristic most LCD monitors are still behind.

The monitor is able to go as high as 85 Hz, but I found that my eyes didn't like that setting, giving me a bad headache. One cause might be the video card, though.

Note that my Dell PC has an NVIDIA Quadro FX video card with 77.72 drivers. If you have an NVIDIA card, I highly recommend you update to the latest certified drivers. They ensure graphics from the latest software are displayed accurately (especially games).

Other video manufacturers I've used have card-specific drivers. It's best to do some research first to make sure the new drivers don't create more problems.

-: Settings :-

Settings on the monitor are easy to peruse. There's even a help menu that tells you how to adjust the image, along with recommendations for the best settings. The latter is great, since I don't have access to the documentation that came with the unit.

-: Observations :-

I found this monitor very sensitive to Electronic Magnetic Interference. If you have lots of electronics devices on your workstation, this monitor might not be for you.

Like many CRT monitors, this unit runs hot to the touch (top-side).

-: Conclusion :-

I've used this monitor since August of 2004, and am quite satisfied. The only recommendation I have is to get a tinted anti-glare device to lay over the display. It reduces glare, and I find that it reduces eyestrain as well from long hours in front of the PC.
