Very hard to beat for the price

Pros Excellent picture, reasonable price
Cons Pretty large/heavy for a 17" if you intend on lugging it to LAN parties.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It really doesn't get any better than this for the price- I would recommend this monitor as well as Dell Trinitron monitors in general.
I purchased this monitor as part of a package from Dell, and I must say that I am very pleased with it. The flat CRT display provides a razor sharp picture with excellent color reproduction, all at a relatively meager price.

The P780's Trinitron technology is much more visually appealing than the classic 'bubble' shaped CRT. Additionally, the flat display seems to be easier on one's eyes when reading for hours at a time, and is ideal for gameplay as it virtually eliminates glare altogether. The display is clear and proportional from all angles unlike conventional monitors- although I'm not sure how important this is, I prefer to look straight at my monitor, and I'm sure you do as well. The only inherent 'drawback' of Trinitron design is the two faint wire lines across the screen- they are necessary to stabilize a flat picture. When I say these faint, I mean SUPER-UBER-MEGA-FAINT... it took me a few days to notice them, and a few days after that, they just kind of disappeared and I haven't really noticed them since. While on the subject of 'cons,' I must also mention that this monitor is one of the heaviest and bulkiest 17" I have come across, which will not be an issue for most people, though it is a minor concern for me as I have attended LAN parties and have carried the thing up flights of stairs and such.

Color and refresh rate are hard qualities to judge as far as monitors are concerned, as the two are largely dependent upon the quality of your video card. I run a generic Geforce256 capable of displaying 32bit color in 1024x768 resolution with a refresh rate of 100 Hz. Definitely not top of the line, but really not too shabby by any standards. That said, this monitor sports a great looking array of colors, and running at 100 Hz is as easy on my eyes as reading a piece of paper in good lighting. Hey- health benefits! Some of those old monitors gave me literal headaches....

Certainly, there are bigger, better Trinitrons out there if you have a big wad of cash to blow (Those big Mitsubishis come to mind). I have also seen the 19" version of this monitor in action and the quality is just as great, but it is bigger. If you can afford something bigger and better, more power to you. However, if you are looking for something in this price range, consider the P780- you would be very hard pressed at best to find a higher quality monitor for $300.
