Possibly the best in its category

Highly ajustable, clear and crisp picture, USB hub, all cables included

Stand and plastics could be sturdier (but still, it's not so bad)

The Bottom Line:
This monitor is almost perfect. It has the features of much more expensive units, and it is very hard to find anything negative to say about it.
I got this monitor on Dell's canadian online store for 180$ CAD instead of the already not so high price of 260$ CAD. What a deal! The specs are seriously attractive for a monitor in this category : it has two video inputs (VGA and DVI, both cables are included), a 4x USB hub (cable is also included), a swiveling/rotating/height-and-tilt-ajusting stand, 600:1 contrast ratio, 8 ms response time, etc etc, along with the standard-for-the-size 1280x1024 resolution. Having a 17 inch LCD monitor with 1280x1024 pixels resolution was really important for me, as I wanted to use the 1707FP with the E173FP I already owned to create a dual monitor setup - but that's not the point, however the setup works perfectly as the 1707FP can use the free DVI output which was left on my video card.
Now, for the image quality (I only used the DVI connexion) : it looks perfect. Colors are rich, brightness is great, there isn't any apparent ghosting, and my unit has 0 dead pixels.
Another important thing : ease of use and functionality. Just plug it in, fine tune some settings with the easy-to-understand OSD which is available in 5 languages, and you have a fully functional monitor. You won't have to install drivers of additional stuff whatsoever, even if you use the USB hub.
Now, THE most impressive thing about the Dell 1707FP : its stand. It allows the display to be swiveled, rotated, tilted, and even highered or lowered. You are almost sure to be able to place it perfectly, unless you are in a very strange situation... Well, back to what I was saying, the display can be rotated (90 degrees). If you can tell that to your video card, you will be able to enjoy the pleasures of seeing more text in Word, Internet, or... anything (you get a 1024x1280 resolution). But, if your computer doesn't have that option, well, don't rotate your 1707FP, and it will still be a pretty great LCD. So many possibilities have a side effect, however : the stand is not as solid as a less ajustable one. But still, it's not that bad, and you shouldn't be afraid for your LCD to move if you don't touch it.
Oh, and the quality of the materials is acceptable, as long as your monitor won't be subject to extreme conditions : the black plastic used for the bezel seems to be easy to scratch.
Finally, I can say that this monitor exceeded my expectations for a 17'' LCD under 200$. I would definitely recommend it.
