The Bottom Line:
I'd say this is a good radio, but it doesn't work for live XM content on the go.
This was the first truly portable satellite radio on the market. And, unfortunately, it isn't very good at the "truly portable" part of this radio. What do you expect? When the first Walkman was first invented, that reception stunk, but now they have very good reception. This was the first line. They have improved, hopefully, on their next line with the Inno.
Some of the better parts of this radio is that it is very portable, i.e. you can take it from home to car easily. The reception is good with either one of the systems, and I live where there is no additional towers to relay XM's signal on. As long as no one sits directly in front of the home antenna (it happens for us,) it easily picks up 3 bars. And I've tried this in my room, and the key thing is for it to face south. It will pick up a good signal through the wall, but it will not pick up a signal through an east-facing window. Its car antenna is even better. I've had very little problems with the car antenna.
What you could try is using the car antenna instead of the "portable" antenna and you could have great reception. Otherwise, you really have a radio that's mobile and can bring with you recorded XM material on the run. Yes, you can record up to 5 hours of program if you preschedule it or upwards of 7 hours of program if you just press the record button. So, those recordings are your best bet on the go.
So, it doesn't live up to its claim, but it's still an awesome radio.
