VERY GOOD DEAL FOR MONEY
Pros
MANY MANY inputs/outputs, DENON quality sound, relatively easy set up.
Cons
none really, OSD would be nice but can't ask for more in price range
Recommended it?
Yes
I have used my Denon 1604 receiver for a few months now. It took a bit of tweaking out of the box to get it to sound right for me. Although I am not an expert, the sound is superior to my previous onkyo amplifier of comparable price. I matched my amplifier to the VERY VERY good speakers made by "home theater direct" in texas. Mated with these speakers the amplifier has a fuller sound than mated with, for example, small JBL amplifiers that were about twice the price. As with all amplifiers a large part of the sound quality will depend on the speakers.
The functionality on this amplifier is great. I use it in the auto-select mode which automatically switches between the necessary DOLBY or DTS digital signal. When the signal is not encoded, or encoded for pro-logic, it will just switch to that. The stereo mode sounds nice. it has your usual "stadium, studio, jazz etc etc" presets which I hardly ever use.
This unit excels in connectivity. It has two digital, one coaxial digital, several analog, and video outputs (including composite video).
I highly reccomend this unit.
