Great Deal

Pros Features, Sound, Staging
Cons No THX
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you want quality, you need DTS, the Denon AVR-2801 should be your next purchase.
I have been recently upgrading my home theater setup and ran across this beauty. The Denon AVR-2801.

Quick specs -
90 Watts per channel
DTS
3 optical 1 coax Inputs
Svideo in and out
On Screen Display
DSP

Ok.
I have this setup with Klipsch KG2s in the front,
Klipsch KV-3 Center, Klipsch SS1 surrounds, Velodyne CT-120 Sub, Toshiba DVD(my roomy's)and an OLD Toshiba 27 inch Blackstripe TV.

The sound that comes out of my system is incredible! Yes I am using Klipsch products(that can't hurt!), but the switch from an old (cough, cough) Awia is OUTSTANDING.

Some of my favorite features on this receiver -
#1. DTS. Digital Theater Sound is a must when viewing DVDs. I didn't think there would be much of a difference, but try watching Pitch Black with DTS and without. The crash sequence at the beginning of the movie occurs in my living room with DTS. Without DTS, it occurs on the TV.

#2. Soundstage - The Denon creates such a lifelike soundstage!!! Se7en platinum edition comes to mind. The rain, oh the rain!!!! I honestly thought it started raining outside a few times. Who needs a rain dance?!?
A great feature of the Denon is the ability to CORRECTLY program the receiver with the dimensions of my living room.
I tell it how far the speakers are from me, and it processes the audio feed accordingly.

#3. On Screen Programming - I guess this could be a curse if you don't have SVideo on your TV. The Denon 2801 has a SVideo output that runs to your tv or monitor. This allows you to view all receiver configurations on the tv. Without this option, you have to use the display on the receiver.

#4. Connections, connections, connections!

#5. Denon quality!

#6. Hardware upgradable to 7.1.

While this amazing units list price is $700.00 or so, you can find it online for much cheaper. I suggest you check crazyeddie.store.com ($467.95 02/15/01) and see if your favorite store will price match.

If you are in the market for a great receiver, without THX, I highly suggest you take a look at this product!!!!
