The Bottom Line:
This receiver kicks some serious butt: recommended for crazy teens and adults that like classical music alike.
Well, once again I decided to purchase an item from a realm I knew nearly nothing about: AV receivers. I originally went into this whole adventure looking for a complete 5.1 digital system, complete with 5 speakers, subwoofer, and of course, a high-end receiver.
I have a friend at work who is basically an audiophile. His recommendations were: Marantz, Harman Kardon, and Denon. I looked at Marantz and Harman Kardon, but the aesthetics and features of the Denon kept me coming back to the Denon store.
What did I like about this amplifier? Well, 90 watts of power is enough power for me (you have to double your power output to get an extra 3dB of noticible sound). From what I had read, the 2801 is a *big* step forward from the 1801, and is definitely getting into the realm of high-end stereo equipment, at least for psuedo-audiophiles like myself.
When I got this puppy home, I plugged it in and hooked it up to my new speakers. All I can say is *wow*.. The range of sounds this monster can produce is unbelievable. I guarantee that you will end the day with all your cd's stacked on top of your CD player, having listened to them all again like it was your first time. I have heard sounds on familiar songs that I never knew existed before..
What I really like about Denon is that they didn't waste their time implementing features that you don't really need, like excessive DSP modes. Instead, they focused on ensuring their receivers have great sound, which in the end is what everyone is looking for.
Alot of people dislike the remote that comes with the unit. I disagree: sure it's not that pretty, but it'll do anything you want, and with it's built in learning mode, you can use it as a universal remote.
Since I only bought the two front speakers, I have yet to explore the realm of Dolby Digital. If you're looking for a great receiver then this is the one for you. I have absolutely no complaints, and I highly recommend it.
