The Bottom Line:
It's a Denon and Denon = Quality everytime.
I bought this receiver several years ago at a discount because it was an out-of-the-box purchase. I paid $499 for it and I have to tell you that it has been worth every penny. This receiver is great for many reasons. The best of which would have to be that Denon has kept the fascia of their receivers practically unchanged for years. The main difference being more features in the newer models. My model, the AVR-87, came with an awesome remote and performs flawlessly. My receiver my be somewhat outdated, but it has enough technology built into, such as DD, DTS... that it still meets the demands of current DVD audio formats. I bought it mainly to experience DTS technology, which it performs well. But to my surprise, DTS is seldom used in movie decoding compared to DD so I rarely experience the pleasure of this audio aspect. I love the features this receiver has, such as the ability to remember all of your settings on every different source available. Also, the headphone output mode shuts off speaker output with the touch of a button so you can watch a movie while everyone's asleep and you don't have to worry about the sound blasting out of your speakers if you accidentally press a button on your remote. It also has A and B speaker switching so you can have two sets of mains, one for movies, one for music or you can run both at the same time. You can switch speakers from the remote. The sound from the Denon is smooth and accurate. I especially like the 5 channel stereo mode, which outputs a stereo signal to all 5 speakers of your home theater setup. If I ever upgrade this receiver for one with more bells and whistles, it will most likely be another Denon. Hopefully by then they will upgrade their fascia so it will at least look like a new piece of equipment! This receive is so reliable that I think even upon upgrading, it will have many years left of operation still. I really can't complain at all about this receiver, what can I say? It's like the BMW cars, many of their older models still haven't changed much in appearance, even though the technology under the hood has. I still like my Denon and it will take a mighty advancement in the audio field to make me trade it in for another.
