Refurb Regrets

Pros Great sound, on the tracks that didn't skip.
Cons Three major failures, beware refurbs.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  I am pretty sure this unit was a fluke, based on all the positive reviews. However, everything I have stated is true, so I can only conclude - beware refurbs.
My somewhat ancient (10+ yrs) Sony player started skipping so I gave it to a desperate friend and purchased the DCM-370 to replace it, seduced by a $99.00 refurbished price and rave reviews. Major disappointment followed. It sounded great but from the beginning had a harmonic ringing sound that emanated from the unit - sounding like a wet finger around a fine crystal glass. Soon, in an hour or two I discovered that most upper tracks (i.e. anything above track 15 or so) would do a "digital skip" which is obviously similar to a record skipping forward with extremely loud (speaker killing) static in there. My heart sunk. O.K. so attempting tolerance and enjoying the fine sound quality of single digit tracks for a few months (excepting quiet passages where the ringing cut through) low and behold the remote went dead. New batteries didn't help.
Those were the only three problems I had with the DCM-370, but I'm ready to throw it out and start over.
I also miss the remote volume control on the Sony units, though I hear the Onkyo (without remote volume) is a solid unit. Finally, the HDCD option was really cool - every time a "HDCD" disk was inserted a little green light came on. Wow. Mark Knopfler never sounded so good.
