So Much for So Little

Pros quality performance sound
Cons no remote on/off, no dimmer
Recommended it? Yes
I bought this unit as a replacement to a ten+ year old Pioneer cartridge changer. Aside from my Toshiba SD4109 DVD player, this is my first new CD player in at least ten years.

The machine has a nice look and I find the controls easy to operate. Buttons are labeled and the display is brightly lit and easy to read. The disc transport seems stable and does not make too much noise when changing discs. The remote is also easy to operate but is not backlit and the buttons are slightly small. The headphone jack is on the front and all other connections are on the back. The unit weighs 12 1/2 pounds.

The features - the things that sold me. There are two internal Burr-Brown 18 bit DACs (note they are not 20 bit). The unit supports standard CDs and recognizes the new HDCD (20 bit) format. HDCD playback causes and additional LED on the front to light. Using standard or HDCD discs, you won't hear anything other than what's on the disc. The sound quality is excellent and HDCD playback is terrific. The sound quality is very smooth - there isn't the harsh sound you find with players.

There is also a coaxial digital output for connection to receivers that support such connections. Note that using the coaxial connection will bypass the Burr-Brown DACs. The headphone jack has plenty of output for those prefer it loud or for those with high impedance headphones. The unit will play CD-R discs.

Playback has pretty much of what you would expect. There is a programmable playback so you can order the tracks and discs anyway you like. There are also three different random playback modes (shuffle), including multi disc shuffle. Just load it up and let it go.

Now a few shortcomings. There is no brightness control from the display. The display is just slightly on the bright side and a dimmer option would be handy. The power switch is the older push button on/off type rather than the newer electronic on/off. There is no way to turn the unit on or off from remote without using some other device. At least the unit doesn't jump into playback when it's turned on. The Burr-Brown DACs are only 18 bit. HDCD is a 20 bit format so I expect there may be something lost in HDCD playback but you wouldn't know it to hear it play.

All in all, I can't see how you could do better for $210. Be advised that I would not buy this unit from Best Stop Digital (beststopdigital.com). They charge an excessively high $29 shipping fee for standard shipping when I know the UPS charge was under $6.00. Check pricegrabber.com and you'll find other choices that won't rip you off!
