Will not read a third of my CDs

At first I thought I had a damaged unit, sent it back and got another and same problem, fully a third of the CDs that I put in just can't be read. And these CDs CAN be read on a $40 walkman. These are all commercially produced CDs (have yet to have a problem with home made CDs). Very disappointed since I agree with other reviewers that the sound quality is great. Strangely it sometimes can read a CD that I've had problems with on my Walk man.
Is this a common problem? I have little experience with different units, (my last one was a Pioneer) but never had this problem before.
