Denon 1920 has major problems
Pros
When it works, it works well with excellent audio and video quality.
Cons
Not truly compatible with recordable DVD formats and should not freeze up under any condition.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
If you only care about playing mass market DVDs, this unit may be satisfactory for you. If you want to play anything else, look elsewhere.
I bought this player mainly because it would play both DVD-A and SACD discs and because it contained a Faroudja scaler that would upscale everything to 1080i and transmit it over an HDMI link. I also relied on the web site for detailed specifications which said the unit would play both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs.
When it is happy with the disc it is playing, the 1920 performs well. I tested the scaler with the HQV/Terranex test disc and it passed the jaggies test with no problems. Both audio and video quality are excellent.
I am most disappointed in the player's lack of true compatibility with various formats. Despite the +/-R/RW compatibility claimed on the web site, the owners manual says it is only compatibile with -R/RW. I confirmed this with Denon. Nearly every other DVD player in the world is compatible with both the + and - formats, but Denon wants $400 more to upgrade to a unit that is claimed to be compatible with both.
As it turned out in practice, the unit is not truly compatible with either format. I have a number of home-recorded DVDs of both + and - format types. Usually, they will play for a minute or two, then the unit freezes up and will not resume normal operation until I unplug it from behind my HT cabinet (takes a lot of digging) and plug it back in again. In my opinion, this is inexcusable. Even if the unit can't play a particular format, it should just say so and continue operating. Bottom line - the firmware in this unit appears to be defective in its design and execution.
My previous unit was a 3-year old Sony. It played everything and did it well. But it didn't have the scaler and HDMI output I wanted. In all other respects, the Sony was far superior.
