Digidesign Mbox - A great travelling home studio

byjkafer Feb 11, 2007

Pros portable, comes with ProTools, uses great Focusrite preamps
Cons no midi, only 2 channels, limited compatibility, locked to ProTools
Recommended it? Yes

Anyone involving themselves in the spoken arts such as voice-over work or podcasting, are going to want a large diaphragm condenser mic. Such beasts are power hungry and as such require extra power. Enter the Mbox by Digidesign. Not only does it add the necessary power as a pre-amp, but it's also... Read full review »

Pros Very economical way to get into pro recording.
Cons Depending on your recording needs, there are only 2 inputs.
Recommended it? Yes

OK, I am not going to bore you with too much of the technical specs of the MBox. If you really want the specs go to www.digidesign.com and read all of them to your hearts content. There is one thing that every one thinking about buying an MBox (or for that matter any Digidesign product) should do... Read full review »

hate it, wish I could return it

Pros haven't found any yet because it doesn't work
Cons doesn't work without update
Recommended it? No

It doesn't work out of the box with Windows XP w/ SP2. After purchase, you have to wait two weeks for an update in the mail (total B.S. for a software company). Steep learning curve, even for a computer expert and a sound engineer. I can't say enough bad things about it. Read full review »

Pros Very reliable and stable, like all Pro Tools systems.
Cons The LE software, by nature, is very CPU taxing.
Recommended it? Yes

I had many reasons why I purchased an Mbox over some other company's equivalents.
Compatibility was the primary reason I chose Mbox. Having a system that allows me to take projects from studio to studio without major sync and file conversion headaches is worth its weight in gold! (All I have... Read full review »

MBox - a very good system

Pros clean-sounding pre-amps for XLR decent version of Pro Tools compact
Cons high-z inputs suck MBox needs to be plugged in to use Digi 001 is better
Recommended it? No

I bought the Pro Tools MBox system about 1 1/2 years ago, and have been learning the ins and outs of it ever since. The benefit of using this is the ability to use Pro Tools, which is with good reason (in my opinion) the industry standard for professional recording. But remember that you can... Read full review »
