The Bottom Line:
I don’t know how I ever lived without the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver. We have been enjoying our DVR for years.
When we purchased our home thirteen years ago, we had a choice to go with either satellite or we used an antenna and would only be able to get two channels. Where I live, cable is not even an option. Thirteen years later, it is still the same- no choice. Well I have two children so only having two channels (which is how many channels we could pick up with an antenna) was out of the question. We started off with PrimeStar and then they were bought out by DirecTV. We have had DirecTV service for about ten years. We have always been loyal customers that paid our bills on time so I called them up about five years ago asking them how much it would cost to get a DVR. They told me it would be around one hundred dollars. After all the money I have spent over the years, I was not happy. I explained to them that we had been loyal customers. I was miffed that they would not give me one for free. So I hung up after some arguing and called back in a few days. I explained to the person that I wanted a DVR. I asked them how they would give new customers free DVR’s but not loyal customers. A few moments later the representative told me she would send someone out with a DVR for being such loyal customers.
A few days later DirecTV installed our DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver / 100-Hours DVR. I was thrilled. I had always wanted one but obviously was not willing to pay for one. I had never had TIVO so I really have nothing to compare this too but we love DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver / 100-Hours DVR.
The DirecTV technician had our new DVR installed in less than a half an hour and had given me all the information I needed to get started. Personally I don’t watch a lot of TV but there always things on when I wasn’t home that I had wanted to watch and never could. (OK I guess I could have learned how to program the VCR but I never did).
Before you can install the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver / 100-Hours DVR you need to have DirecTV Service and a satellite. Included in the box is the A/V cables, S-Video Cable, Phone cord, Power cord, Access card, User guide, Remote control and batteries. Our DirecTV Plus DVR was initially installed by a DirecTV representative but we did have to replace it once. Our phone line got struck by lightning which ran into our house and blew out our TV and DVR. So the second box was mailed to us and my husband replaced it. For him, it was easy to replace. By following the user’s guide my husband was able to properly set up the DVR. It took him about fifteen minutes before we were up and watching TV again.
The unit itself is silver and measures 20 x 16 x 7 inches and weighs about 13 pounds. The unit easily fits on my shelf under my TV. The DVR is attractive looking and will fit into the décor of most homes.
The front of the DVR has a door panel, usb port, power button, remote sensor, guide button, menu button, record button, light ring, select button, arrows, active button and information button and another door panel where the access card and reset button are.
The back of the DVR houses the satellite inputs, rf remote antenna input, usb port, out to TV, s-video, ¾ channel switch, off-air in, digital audio optical, video input, audio, phone and power inlet.
The DVR is easy to use, just power it on and start enjoying. I really wonder how I lived without a DVR before. I almost never watch “live” shows anymore because I don’t like to watch commercials. Anything I do watch, I tape for later so I can enjoy the program commercial free.
The DVR comes with a remote that is easy to use. I will do a review on all the features of the remote later. To record a program just click on the guide and go to the show you want to record and hit the record button. You can do it for shows that are currently showing or showing in the future. I love that you can tape full seasons of a show. I only have a few shows that I watch on a regular basis and that is Law and Order, Judge Judy, Peoples Court and American Idol. So I have these shows programmed into the DVR so they record anytime there are on.
If you accidentally record something that you didn’t want to (my children are notorious for this), the shows are easy to remove, even if you record them for the season.
With the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver you can record up to 100 hours of programs. Between the four of us, we sometimes get to about 20% full but I tell my boys they either have to start watching their recorded shows or delete them.
Once you have recorded a show it is easy to watch. Just pull up the menu and click on the show you want to watch and hit play. At any time during the show you can stop watching, fast forward, pause or rewind. Once you are done watching it will ask you if you want to save or delete. Once we watch something we rarely keep it unless it is a movie. I might watch it during the day and my children may want to watch it later. So it is your choice to either remove it from the list or keep it.
Another feature I like with a DVR is that I can fast forward not only commercials but any part of the show I want. I love American Idol but sometimes the show can really drag on. I can fast forward or go back whenever I want.
With the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver you can record two shows at once. This is good and bad. If you are recording two shows, you must either watch one of the shows being recorded or what a show that is already recorded. You cannot record two shows and watch another live show.
You can also pause live TV or a recorded show with the DVR. This is a great feature for when someone comes to the door or you get a phone call in the middle of your favorite show. Once you are done what you were doing, just start the show and it starts playing right where you paused it. My family really likes this feature when watching Nascar races. If there is a wreck, they can go back and see it over and over if they like.
Another thing I like about the DVR is that if you are watching a live show and haven’t recorded it, if for some reason, let’s say the phone rings and you forget to pause it, you can come back and rewind whatever you were watching. The DVR has a 90 minute buffer.
One thing I don’t like about the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver is that when you tape a sporting event and it runs over, you could miss the end of it. My son will tape the Nascar races as he is often racing the same day. It stinks when you come home to watch it and see that the race runs over by a few minutes and you have taped everything but the last maybe ten minutes of the race. We often tape the program right after it so if this happens, we have the whole race. The biggest problem we have is when there is a rain delay of a sporting event. If the Nascar race starts three hours late, normally taping the next show after doesn’t record the whole race. It would be nice to be able to program the DVR to record the event and not just a time period.
Another small issue we have with the DVR is that it does not distinguish between first runs of a show and repeats. This again is a minor problem but at times it can be a pain as my DVR may fill up and I hate to start deleting my children’s shows without knowing if they had seen them before or not.
The DVR also has a built in caller id service. If your phone rings while watching TV, it shows on the screen the number and who is calling, just like the caller id on your phone. This is a nice service but can also be pain.
Unfortunately you do have to pay a $4.99 a month fee for using the DVR service but to me it is well worth it. This may deter some from wanting the service, but I will never watch live TV again if I don’t have too!
I really like the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver especially because we are rarely home. With my youngest son racing we are on the road a lot. I also work full time and have to keep up with the house. So it makes it nice to be able to record the shows I want to watch and be able to watch them for an hour or so before going to bed at night. I love that you can watch the shows whenever you want.
The DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver is easy to use. No one in our family has problems in our family using it. There are larger units on the market but 100 hours is more than enough for my family.
Personally I don’t know how I ever lived without the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver. We have been enjoying our DVR for years and hope to have it for many years in the future. If you are looking for a DVR, we would recommend the DirecTV Plus DVR DTV Receiver/ 100-Hours DVR.
