Terrific machine, easy to use

Pros Great quality, simple programming, time saving features.
Cons None that I can think of.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Best video product I've gotten in years.
After dealing with a house full of VHS tapes on which the labels had fallen off and wasting tons of time searching trough them, we decided to simplify our lives and get the DirectvPlus DVR. To say this has changed our lives and saved a ton of time is putting it mildly. No more missed shows, no more trying to find the correct VHS tape.

To start, the DVR is incredibly easy to use. If you want to record something, you simply find the program in the guide and hit the record button. If you want to record every episode of this show, simply hit the button twice. You'll never miss a favorite show again, which is a nice feature since the networks have a habit of changing time slots. This was nice when the President's speech bumped one of our favorite shows... the DVR recorded it at its later time.

You can record two different things at the same time, as long as one channel is tuned in. Meanwhile, you can watch something else you've recorded. The "list" feature shows you everything you've recorded and how much disc space you have left. We haven't come close to using even fifty percent, and we record a lot of shows.

Playback is a breeze. Simply select the show from the list menu and hit play. The quality is spectacular... you cannot tell the difference between something live and something that has been recorded.

There is also a "30 second jump" feature. One push of the button takes you forward thirty seconds, which is the length of the average commercial. It also comes in handy watching baseball, since the time between pitches is usually longer than 30 seconds... you can watch a game in no time. There are also four fast forward and reverse speeds, slow motion, frame by frame, etc.

The guide has a nice feature which lets you jump forward or back 12 hours at a time, so you can see what's coming up very quickly. It will also let you sort things: movies, sports, etc.

The DVR will also automatically record 90 minutes of whatever channel you're watching. So if the phone rings, you can simply pause whatever you're watching, then come back to it later. It will save an hour and a half of programming without hitting any button, so you never miss a thing due to interruptions.

Honestly, this is a terrific electronic gadget. We've cut our TV time viewing down considerably (since the average show is 42 minutes once you take out the commercials.) You can usually get this free from Directtv...either wait for one of their offers of just tell them you're considering cable. The subscription is about ten bucks per month... well worth it.
