The Bottom Line:
Skip this unit... and DirecTV. They are getting too big for their britches like cable did before satellite came out.
11/02/07 UPDATE!!!!!!
The replacement unit I received from the recall is just as bad as the first unit. Same issues and problems. Again I contacted DirecTv and the same spill. The tech wanted to send me a refurbished unit and was in process of doing so. Well what I did not catch was the muttering from the tech about a new 2 year contract. I totally refused!
Shortly before writing this, the Dish Network installer left after installing my new 722 HD receiver. I have cancelled DirecTv and for good! You guys have no idea what a difference the Dish unit has to the DirecTv unit. We are talking mountains to mole hills here.
UPDATE!!! Open the access door where you insert the access card into your DVR and look for the little sticker next to the reset button. If it says MDL: R15 and MFR:500 then CONGRATULATIONS! You have the same piece of crap DVR I do and DirecTV is now actively recalling these units and replacing them for FREE! Call 1-800-DIRECTV NOW!!!!
Replaced my DirecTV Tivo unit that crashed after only a year of operation with this unit. The Tivo service and unit are SUPERIOR hands down to this DirecTV DVR unit and service. Multiple problems with unit. Unit crashes in the middle of a program locking up the receiver. Must reset at least every other week due to problems. No auto channel program. Each and every channel must be manually programmed in. No skip forward or back on features. Features are very difficult to operate. Counter on screen stops working constantly. Series record option doe not always record like the DirecTivo unit did. Unable to watch recorded program while signal out due to constant "SEARCHING" sign on screen. Recorded programs randomly go dead while watching them. Must reboot. DirecTV raising, raising, raising rates on service and DVR fee after putting me under contract. Tricked me into a !!!!2 YEAR!!!! contract with this piece of crap! Normal programs broadcast by stations in 5.1 surround changed to 2 channel by DirecTV. Not "REAL" all digital service and quality like advertised. Must pay extra for movie channels to get "REAL" digital audio. What is really pathetic is that DirecTV's broadcasts are WORSE than ALL DIGITAL over the air transmissions received by my outdoor antenna. And you can believe im going to DISH HD with VOOM at the end of this contract!
