The Bottom Line:
The Bottom Line is happy if the child is happy, and more than happy if the child doesn't break something.
My son Buster is the second child, and he doesn't ever seem to understand that his older sister has things he doesn't because, well, she doesn't destroy them. Buster wants to be older, and he wants stuff to go with being older, so his aunt obliged and bought him the Memorex MD6443 Personal CD Player for his birthday this past March.
::: The Basic Info :::
The Memorex MD6443 Personal CD Player plays both CDs as well as CD-R/RWs, and features a bass-boost system, shuffle, programmable track memory, repeat function, and 60-second anti-shock protection, as well as a DC jack, LCD display, headphone jack, and line-out port. It comes with your typical set of cheapy headphones, and uses 2 "AA" batteries.
::: Buster Hasn't Busted It :::
I'll be honest; this has been used for the past almost-ten months by a four-year-old. He doesn't have a lot of use for the programmable track memory or the bass-boost system, but the other features he uses the heck out of. This is a child who's constantly in motion, so an anti-skip feature is a must-have. It's decent, but not as efficient as my daughter's, and he often loses some of his music. The sound quality is decent as well, and does improve when you replace the headphones.
It's hard to tell how well batteries last in the Memorex MD6443 Personal CD Player. They seem to run out fairly quickly, even with the auto shut-off feature, but then again, this is being used by a four-year-old who likes to play the same song over and over and over again when he's using the player, so it's anyone's guess how they would last with "normal" use.
We haven't had any issues playing CD-Rs, but he only has one that I've ripped myself, and the rest are all regular CDs.
I wasn't expecting a lot from a $20 player, but for the money, it's held up very well. Even with the rough use it's gotten, it still works just as well as the day we got it, so I'd say we've gotten his aunt's money's worth from it.
