My experience on eMachine
Pros
cheap, fit the basic requirements of most students
Cons
Got to change or add many parts, very poor service
Recommended it?
No
I bought this eTower 10 months ago. Yes, it is an old model today, but I believe many things have not been changed today.
It was a very cheap and not bad deal when I decided to buy a computer. I paid $450 when I purchased it. I gave up the free deal, which needed to sign a 3 years internet contract. Actually, I think it is a expensive "free" deal, because you total payment at the end of contract will be more than $720. There are so many free internet access provider, so why should we pay for that?
The first part I changed is the modem. It works, but has a loud, non-stop noise. I changed it in the first week. I believe nobody can stand this kind of noise.
The second part I changed is the hard driver. It is not a quiet one, especially after a month. And also 4.3GB is really not enough even for a student. Just think about this, you will store your homework, project on it, you want download some music from the net, you want to play games, etc.
Then I bought another graphics card fot it. Why? Because the existing one is not enough for many today's PC games. And finally, I upgraded the RAM from 32MB to 96MB.
Another thing need to mention is its free PCI slots. It has total 3 slots that you can use, which are a PCI, a ISA, and a PCI/ISA shared slot. Modem used one PCI, so, only one PCI slot is free. It's no good for later upgrade.
About the service, I just want to say that's the worst service I have met. Such as call for support, not only you need to pay for the phone, but also you will got almost nothing after the call. What they told you is the things you already known. The problem you can't figure out why, they can't either. How about the rebate? Well, I got it 2 months ago, after many times contacting with them, and 3 times mailing of all same rebate materials.
Now, let's look the good things. First of all, it is really a cheap one, even you do not want the "free" deal. Second, it works pretty good after you changed the parts that needed to be changed, and added more RAM.
