I did not purchase this product and right now I am thanking my lucky stars. My brother did purchase this machine and right now he is ready to throw it out the window!!
First, let me explain why I am writing this review on eMachine 366C, my brother purchase this product for himself and my mother to use together. Neither one of them knew much about computers or the internet, so when they purchased it, they called upon me(who just knows a little more than they do) to help them get the machine up and running. They live about 200 miles from me, so I planned a trip to go up and help them get their new computer running.
My brother purchased his emachine in May, 1999. We got it set up and running and for the first few months they had little or no problems with it. When this computer was 6 months old, it CRASHED! They returned it to the store where it was purchased and luckily my brother had purchased a extended service policy. The store service department had to send it off to have it fixed. Two weeks later they picked up their emachine and things haven't been the same since. The computer when turned on began making a loud roaring noise, when it starts to boot up it gets to the screen where Windows 98(says this on the screen) appears and it hangs and want move. The longer they used it the worse things got. Every time they would do a scan disk or try to defragment the drive, it would say bad file, they would tell it to correct it and when they tried to do maintenance the next time the same thing would happen.
I was back at their house this weekend August 10, 2000 and my mother asked me to help her take the computer back to the service department, where they had purchased their emachine. It is now giving a message of "DeBug VT" when you boot up the machine. The technician told us that they had a major hard drive failure and that the RAM was also bad. Again, they need to send it off for repair. The technician didn't have any idea what the "DeBug VT" was and told me I should call emachine technical support to find out.
Well as far as their technical support goes, we have called numerous times over the last year with this computer and haven't received any helpful information. They have told us on numerous occasions that they couldn't find out anywhere what these error messages meant. We were told many times that would get back in touch with them never to be heard from again. When you call tech support(it is long distance)you are put on hold by a machine and we have held on for as long as 45 minutes with anyone answering. We were given an 800 number, but that only got us to the message telling us for tech support to call the long distance number.
My brother purchased emachine not only for the price, but because he had heard so many good things about them from people he worked with and friends of his who have had computers. He has been very unhappy with the machine and the technical support that he has received from emachine and is in the process of writing the company to tell them of all the problems he has had. He is hoping that emachine will make good on his purchase of their product or at least fix the machine.
We did find out that the roaring noise was the fan on the emachine, the technician told us that they have had to replace quite a few of them because the original fans where defective. This sure made us wonder if maybe the entire product is not defective. While in line yesterday we noticed other people their with their emachines. While standing there we asked them what problems they where having with there emachine and 3 of the 4 people we talked to described the same problems that my mother and brother where having.
The accessories my brother uses with his emachine are his scanner, printer and microphone. It has given him no problems in using any of these accessories, it is just the computer itself that has been the problem.
If you are considering purchasing this product, I would do a lot of research and read a lot of consumer opinions before I went out and bought an emachine. You may not be getting a product that will last you 6 months.
