Little trouble first year, gets worse by 3rd year

Pros Inexpensive (at the time), Good angle of view.
Cons Dark scenery loses detail. Replaced after 3.5 years - bad light engine.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Good value at the time, but better models are available now. I would avoid buying this used.
I purchased my E44W46LCD from Best Buy in the fall of 2004, and overall, I was happy with it. I watch a fair amount of TV, and enjoy the picture. I did have one problem with it.(see below).
I use the TV with a Samsung OTA HD Tuner, a ReplayTV, an XBox, a VCR and a DVD player.
The set was low in price ($2000), so I did not expect it to be the best available in all aspects. I think that the picture is good - especially when viewing true HD material.

I do have a few nits to pick - thing that could probably be fixed in firmware - if they have the ability (and desire) to update the set.
1. I connected the audio 'Monitor output' to a wireless headset transmitter, so I could watch TV while others are sleeping. Unfortunately, the 'Monitor output' only works for the internal tuner and the composite video and S-Video inputs. I understand that it would take more hardware to downconvert the DVI and component inputs to the composite 'monitor output', but it should be a no-brainer to switch the selected audio to the audio 'monitor output'. There is a variable audio output too, but I want a fixed output, so I can turn down the internal speakers, and listen on my wireless headsets.
2. Occasionally while watching TV using the analog internal tuner, the TV channel will pop up on the display briefly, as if I pressed a button on the remote (but I didn't). I thought that it might be related to a signal drop-out, but it does not seem to be the case.
3. The Picture-in-picture (PIP) limits the feature to composite/S-Video inputs or internal tuner.

These are minor nit-picks, but I did have a strange problem several months after purchase. The diagnostic LED on the front panel indicated that the bulb needed to be replaced, and the TV would not turn on. I called for service, but when the service man came, it was working again. He ordered a bulb anyway, and several weeks later he replaced it. (I don't know why he showed up without a bulb in the first place - they got all the make/model info from me when I called.)

Update 4/2/2008: My set is still working although it's developed a subtle problem. It appears to have a hazy/cloudy yellow discoloration on part of the screen. The affected area is about 12 inches in diameter located just below center. I only notice the problem when the screen is displaying something white.
I notice now that it is also not very good at handling dark scenery in movies (loss of detail). I don't recall if this has been a problem from the beginning or if it has deteriorated over time. Perhaps it is a problem common to rear projection LCD - poor black levels & contrast ratio.

By the way... I was told that the bulb would need to be replaced often - perhaps annually, and would be covered under the extended warranty, so I purchased the extended warranty when I got the TV. Except for the bulb replacement in 2005. I have not needed a new bulb (3 years).

Update 7/7/2008: The yellow blob has grown more noticeable when on white scenes - so I called in the repair man (with just 2 months left on my extended warranty). The diagnosis is a bad 'light engine'. Replacement part is no longer available, so I get a new TV!
Best buy will replace the TV with one of closest type currently available. I however decided to have the cash equivalent applied to a different model.
