The Bottom Line:
If I can find something else that sounds this good without the light show, I will buy it. So far, I have not.
I bought this to put in my 540i because the specs made it appear that I could set the display to amber and I knew that Eclipse made great head units. A year later and I can get this thing to turn every color BUT amber. The display is too bright at night and was a distraction for the first few days. Enough rant.
I want to replace this with a Nakamichi CD-400, but I had a Nak 35z in my 528i and although it sounded incredible, the Eclipse sounds better. This sounds so good just with the factory amp I have not yet installed the PPI amps and Quart sub I got to go with it. This unit has plenty of volume and great bass without them. And again, the clarity is the best I have ever heard in a car. One other minor complaint is that the button to eject the CD is on the top left of the faceplate. The faceplate slides down at an angle to access the CD slot. You have to reach into the gap to hit the eject button which is a bit of a distraction in traffic, especially if you have large hands.
Bottom line, if you can live with that ridiculous high school display you will be rewarded with the best sound you can buy for less than a grand.
