Not a bad little stereo
Pros
Decent sound, good looking, compact
Cons
Not portable, although it could be at its size.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Nothing fancy, but I nice, attractive compact stereo with good sound.
This is a nice little stereo for an apartment. It looks nice, it has good sound, and it seems well made.
My old stereo was a massive affair consisting of big speakers, a cd changer, a huge ancient Pioneer receiver. It kicked...until one party when a drunk guy knocked one of the speakers over and then stepped on the woofer. Waah! However I soon found this little number at the Salvation Army for $15...and since I was getting a new apt which was small and where excessive noise was a no-no, I went for it.
Its a 3 piece unit with two speakers and a main unit with amp, radio, cassette, and 3-CD changer.
I like it! The sound is pretty good for a small, inexpensive stereo, not bad even for classical music, and you can get pretty decent volume out of it- plenty for filling up the living room with nice loud bassy Led Zeppelin anyway. Not good enough for hearing damage/ "offend entire neigborhood" loud, but who cares?
Sometimes, listening to a big swoopy 19th century symphony, I wish I had my old stereo running, to provide the proper expansiveness of sound, but really its not bad.
What I really like is the appearance. Most of these smaller, cheaper stereos are just hideous and garish-looking. This is tasteful and restrained, with a nice blue display. And it seems pretty well made. I had been biased against Emerson because my parents years ago bought one of their VCRs and it was total junk, but this unit is holding up pretty well after 1.5 years in my possession and however long the previous owner used it. The laser in the CD player seems pretty strong- it plays my CD-Rs and CD-RWs fine, even if they're a bit scratched or dirty.
Minor quibble: The speakers don't attach to the main body, so the stereo is not really portable, although given its size, it could be.
I understand it costs $100 or so new.
