The Bottom Line:
Not for the lead footed driver. Save for a better Detector.
Escorts again, has been around since the beginning of Smoky and the Bandit. Escort has provided a strong line of detectors, from the Original Escort, Passport, DSP Escort, Original Solo and the Current 8500 Escort. Since Mike Valentine had departed Cincinnati Microwave, Escort had not produced a strong product to contend with Valentine and Beltronics. With the Merger with Escort and Beltronics, things have now changed.
Before the merger, Escort had put their hands into building a Hidden mount detector. This unit designated the Escort SR-1. The SR-1 followed the Escort 7500 in the circuitry format. Like the 7500, the SR-1 supplies a clear and understandable Red 280 LED Matrix display for Speed enforcement, SWS and Safety Radar readings. With the display mountable anywhere in the vehicle, it would be difficult for any theft or shadowing vehicle to see in your vehicle. Thought myself, I would have the display mounted/integrated on my dash and not below the steering wheel like many other drivers and reviews mount their units.
Dealing with K40, Beltronics, and the Escort hidden detectors, the Escort provide the BEST hookups than the other manufactures (never had my hands on Whistler). The Escort provides a Radar Antenna Pickup and dual Laser pickups. The unit mimics the K40 in some aspects. With the Antenna mounted under the grill and the Laser detector mounted on the License plate zone (difficult if no Plate).
Performance of the SR-1 has been Adequate. X and K band pickup has been on par with many standard dash mount detectors. Ka band too has been on par, but lacking in good pickup like the lower unit detectors. The Laser module provide excellent warning when ?hit? with laser. Bounce off ?stray laser? is less likely to be picked up by the License plate location. This is where the Whistler and the Beltronics laser Modules are mounted near the mirror, searching for a stray signal from a laser gun.
For the money the Escort SR-1 is overly priced unit for the protection provided. The Bel 815STi provides more protection for price. Though the 815STi does not provide as featured display or hookup as the Escort does. The Bel 815STi provides more K and Ka warning.
The Escort SRX is the new remote detector that Escort is offering to solve the Ka deficiency and improved X and K performance. Through this unit too is more than overly priced. The SRX is the Escort 8500 circuitry provided as a remote unit with Laser Shifting ?Jammer? unit. Plus the SRX is VG-2 Safe.
Recommend, not really. The units Price is the killer?Lack of overall performance and for the price you can get a Bel 915 STi/975STi at a better cost and save for gas and brake pads.
The best semi-hidden detector would be the antenna mount next to your mirror and the Display mount behind your dash like the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that shine on your windshield. This would provide optimum receiving and a concealled display without taking your eyes of the road completly.
